I have an avi file that uses .h264 and has hard subs. I know you can use subrip to convert .vob sub files to .srt. I'm just wondering, does subrip support .h264, because when I open the video file I see nothing.

It supports avi's, shouldn't matter what video codec they use as long as you have a decoder installed. Appears to decode via VfW to, so just because you can play the file back doesn't mean anything. Install a recent ffdshow build and make sure that AVC decoding is enabled for VfW.

can you open it in virtualdub?
if not install latest ffdshow and enable avc/h264 under vfw(video for windows).
edit:i'm too slow...
