  1. I have been having some problems lately with Taiyo Yuden DVD-R discs. At first I thought it was a bad batch and supermediastore.com gladly exchanged them. The second batch was the same and I returned those for a third. No luck. I have bought several batches in the past with no problems until now. I have a LiteOn 411-S DVD 4X burner. Got it about a year and a half ago and did the firmware upgrade after purchase. I am not sure the firmware number. The new batches of TY -R 4X are only burning at 1X.
I still have some of the older batches of DVD that burn great. Their serial numbers begin with GD. The new ones that only burn at 1x begin with GH. I ran DVDIdentifier and they come up at TY TYG03. Anyone have any idea why this is happening? Thanks

Aren't the TYG03 16x media? Maybe your burner doesn't recognize this newer media.

I quit using TYs after getting several bad batches for customers. I find local store media is better and in most cases cheaper.

According to the DVD media list (on the left) those are 16X and your burner probably doesn't recognise them. Try updating your firmware and see if that helps.

I thought they were 16x. Didn't someone else recently post this media code in relation to that person having these same issues?

I have looked all over LiteOn's site looking for the Firmware upgrades. Does anyone have the link?

He's right, LiteOn doesn't have a firmware upgrade for this drive.

    Oxford,

You might try emailing LiteOn's Tech Support - until then, you'll probably have to search for media that works with the drive.

Firmware issues can kill DVD burning - went through that with a Plextor and it wasn't fun.

    That sucks.
I know you ordered the 4x but supermediastore obviously substituted the 16x thinking that it would be alright. Since you can't get an firmware update, I would send them back to SMS and get a refund, or call them and have them verify that they will only send what you ordered, no substitutes.

Just about any. Don't get me wrong ty's are OK but you have to wait for shipping and they usually come in a plastic wrapped spindle without a cake box and shipped with just soy peanuts cushioning them. I can't begin to count the amount of times I've return shipped media. There really is no significant price difference or quality when I purchase Verbatim, Memorex, Sony, or Maxell locally at Walmart, Staples, or other retailer. If you buy on sale you can get your DVDs cheaper than TYs and have money left over to buy cases or ink for your printer.

  12. This sucks... It costs $8 to ship these discs back. This would be the third time. I feel like I am better off buying a new burner. Newegg has a liteon 16x out of box for $38. It make me wonder if they aren't making the 4x discs anymore. Rima.com doesn't even sell the TY 4x.

That might be the case. Take heart though. 16x is the fastest that DVD can burn so this latest line of drives is the last in the road. You might want to consider upgrading your drive because if these discs are giving you a headache I can almost guarantee they won't be the first.

The unfortunate fact is that older drives don't recognize newer media. There is more to it than just the write speed. If the drive doesn't recognize the media, it uses a default write strategy which often isn't right for the media. The write strategy determines parameters such as the laser power level that is used for buring the disc. The media makers no longer produce their older media. You might luck out and get the dregs off of some dealer's shelf but that's about it. Burners are so cheap these days, it's not worth messing around with older burners. Unless you have some special emotional attachment to it because it was a gift from your late Aunt Bertha or something, lose it and get a new drive. It will cost you less than $40 if you shop around and it will save you a LOT of grief.

While DVD Burners are really cheap because they've hit the roof so to speak from a technological aspect I'd not recommend pitching your drive even one you believe to be dead into the garbage. If it still functions, find someone who needs one and sell it to them for $5-$10. If it's non-functioning find someone who likes to play with dead toys. There should be a computer shop near you someplace. If you bring your drive in I'm quite sure there will be some geek who will take it off your hands and may even give you a few bucks. Most older drives only need a few adjustments or a good manual cleaning to bring them back to life. I still fix, clean or both CD Burners all the time for people who don't want to invest in newer technology for their aging machines. Never pitch it, pass it along.

  16. This a pretty well documented practice with the Taiyo Yuden Value Line discs. First you saw it when they were shipping the 8X discs in some orders for the 4X. Now they are shipping the 16X discs. There's nothing wrong with the discs, just the older burners don't support them as the other posters have made clear. It's a shame that the dvd burner manufacturers don't release updated firmware with the new media codes and some write strategies to support the new 16X media at the burner's maximum speed.

The older DVD burners can still be used to write/rewrite DVD+/-RW discs and CD-R/CD-RW discs.

I purchased a 50 pack of Taiyo Yuden 16X DVD-R 4.7GB Media Shiny Silver Finish on Friday. I'll be burning them in a newly installed LG 4167BK. Hope they can burn at least 8x.
