I have two parts, each 700 meg and i want to amalgamate both halves into one 700 meg file

i have virtualdubmod so lets use that (if possible).

Open both avis, file->append segment for the second clip.
Select Video->compression and select divx or xvid. If you can't find them install the xvid codec or the divx codec. Use the built in xvid calculator to get correct output size or use a bitrate calucator, www.videohelp.com/calc and set the video bitrate.
    File->save as.
    Done.

The highest level of output is what you have right now...it will obviously be much less after combining and compressing again.

Since the original audio is probably AC3, I would suggest compressing to lower bitrate mp3 or aac.

I think XviD is better, doesn't mean that you will. You really need to try both.

  6. cool, i'll give both a try.

lastly, globally i'm trying to do the following:
on one DVD (4.7gig) i want to put the following:
    - two video files at 1.36gigs each
    - one video file at 700megs
    - and the last one (this one) at the largest possible size to still fit on that dvd.

howbig is pushing it? 900 megs?

A DVD actually holds 4.37GB. With the sizes you gave, you should have 950MB left over, if my calculation is correct. If you use good quality DVD media, you should be able to put 900MB additional in there with no problems. Be aware that different programs calculate video sizes differently, so check the total size before you burn.

If you're using DVD, why do you have a 700MB limit?

I think you might need to spend some time in the guides section

But to get you through for now:
If you're planning on doing a multipass encode, then you need to do multipass, 1st pass first, and then multipass, nth pass 2nd, 3rd, 4th ....... for however many passes you wish to do (probably fair to say most would do either 2 or 3 passes all up most of the time). Direct Stream Copy does as it says .... directly copies the video stream. Because you need to recompress using a different codec with different settings, you need to use Full Processing mode.

Fast recompress, that way you avoid converting to RGB24.
