It probably will, but doesn't know it! Try changing the fourCC with AVI FourCC Code Changer to DX50 and see if it doesn't work.
If not, reencoding is the only solution - VirtualDub is your friend in that case.

  3. I see from your Last Post, you have a PHILIPS 642 ,This player does Play XVID.

What are the specs of the Video?I bet even if you Encode it to Divx with the Same Specs,it will not Play. There has to be somthing in the way the Video was Encoded why it doesnt Play.

  4. As above. XviD encoded at the "right specs" will definitely play on "DivX compatible" players.

As for your original question, yes, try VirtualDub. For a near foolproof solution (though will be SLOW), get AutoGK.

Exactly, the 642 doesn't support QPEL, so if you encoded with DivX and qpel enabled it wouldn't play either. So you don't need to convert to DivX, but rather to XviD or DivX with the correct settings.

As suggested try AutoGK with the ESS profile.

Dotn worry reckoshay, Ive yet to get a Divx file to play on a set top Divx player with any quality. The last attempt I made the picture results were not even close to VCD, I mean it looked terrible! Audio played fine though!

Ill follow this thread and hopefully Ill learn something that will help me too!

AutoGK has a special setting for making ESS Vibratto (the chipset of your player) compatible DivX/XviD's - The ESS profile. QPEL is a setting in the DivX/XviD codec - a special way of encoding the video, which ESS chips chokes on. The interesed reader may Google it.

  9. You can easily make a DivX/XviD file of "DVD quality" play fine on a stand-alone player.

I agree - with AutoGK or avi.net, it's a breeze to encode excellent AVI's from DVD sources. Just don't try squeezing 2 hr + videos on to a CD. That will usually not look too good.

To follow up my previous statement, I am having 100% success playing Divx files on my newly purchased Philips 642. All of my videos have identical quality as the source MPEG2! Im extreamly happy. Just wish... I could encode faster, guess its time for a new computer.
