Nero - DVD Santa - nothing works - why?

For awhile I wsa downloading and burning moves fairly well. Then one day Nweo and DVDSanta started giving me error mesages. So today I scrubbed and formatted my hard dvive and reloaded Nero 6 and DVDSanta.

There is hardly anything else on the hard dive, but when I ask Nero to import an avi file it says "unsupported file format". DVD Santa always goes in to Not Resoponding mode.

I downloaded a trial version of AnyDVD to see it it wld help but it didn't.
I downloaded something labeld a Divx codec for XP, and that did nothing.

Now I'm trying to import an avi file and the "select files and folders" is "not reponding".

What am I doing wrong?

UPDATE: I downloaded ColeK Media - C codec and now when I inpirt an avi file to Nero I get: Haali Media A Splitter AVI: Can't find Index.
