tried to save an AVI file to WAV in Virtualdub. When I went to save I recieved
the Vdub error message "No audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format"

Vdub does save other files though - but not this particular file. It is an avi of a TV program.

What am i doing wrong ? or what tool do I need ?

You need the codec the audio uses to decompress the audio.

Use GSpot to find out what audio codec is used for this file, then either look for it in the tools section here, or google for it.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  3. I am having the same problem.

Have an avi file, try to extract wav using virtualdub and virtualdubmod, get message no audio decompressor ....... 0x0055 mpeg1 layer-3 .. when I use gspot it says I have 3 audio codecs installed that can deal with the file:

Fraunhofer, mpeg layer 3 and nero digital

I have installed various codecs then uninstalled them a number of times.

    Does anyone have any ideas??

    Cheers

Sometimes when that happens you can just try a second or third time and it will work.

Lame MP3 Codec should do the job.

... and codec packs blow. Install only the codec(s) you need.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  8. K-Lite codec pack is KNOWN to cause a number of problems, first step would be to remove everything that came with it.

Windows comes with an ACM mp3 decompressor. If you don't go around installing stuff and screwing with your system, then it should still be working. I don't think that LAME's ACM includes a decoder.

GSpot would be reporting installed dshow decoders, which don't count. I think that installing the updated fraunhoffer (spelling?) codec is probably what screws up ACM decoding.

Define ENABLE_DECODING if you want to use the decoding (alpha state, doesn't decode at the
moment, so use it only if you plan to develop)
Although from recollection it is working in lame 4.0 alpha.

  10. I have the same problem and a workaround that did the trick for me.

Use "direct stream copy" of the audio and save it as a .mp3.

Use your favourite mp3 to wav method and you get a nice wav file

At least it worked for me.

I would realy like for somebody to solve the main problem

You could just save it out of virtualdub as a wav file and save some time.
    Read my blog here.
