Hello,
I have a Liteon LVW-5115GHC+ DVD recorder. When I insert a brand new disc and press the record button, I get a message saying the disc is invalid. I have also gone through the easy guide menu, but to no avail. The discs I am using are TDK DVD-R discs I bought from Costco. These blank discs seem to be of good quality. What am I doing wrong?

You might want to try another brand or type of DV before you return it. LIte-Ons have a fairly high return rate acording to a Dealer I have spoken to.

Try Verbatim, I've had a lot of luck with them. My TDK disks were flakey on the Lite-on, sometimes a disk would record, other times it would not. Also, make sure you check the Lite-on website for certified disk brands.

I recently acquired a 5001 from a friend for $20 because he said it was flakey. It is...with Memorex discs (only 2 out of 5 +RW I've tried so far will even get to the recognition stage). Try some other discs...

The LITEON drives inside LiteOn units are supposedly better on DVD+R and DVD+RW than DVD-R or DVD-RW. I don't know if I agree with that, but it's something you may want to consider.
Also be sure to use good media. www.nomorecoasters.com
YUDEN, MCC, MAXELL, SONY ... those can all be DVD+R media.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

Thanks for the reply, a new firmware was released, so I downloaded it and installed it and now it plays fine. Quality is very good in LP-3hr mode. The dvd plays fine on my laptop and panasonic player

the 5005 is a much better machine. Still some disks don't play on all players.

What makes the 5005 better? Can it also play DIVX files?
Anywho, all I am doing is making basic recording, nothing fancy. This player seems to have the bang for the buck. I mean $130, hell I might buy another one for upstairs. -
I had a 5005. Great picture quality - when it worked. Within months I had the "jitter" problem & "invalid disk" errors. Nothing I did fixed it (firmwares, cleaning, cooling, restore to defaults, etc). I returned it.
Pity, 'cause I really liked it! -
You should have just replaced the burner. With Sony/Liteon 16X burners going for under $50USD these days, that's always an option. If you are handy with a soldering iron, there are some fixes you can do such as adding cooling fans, chip coolers, parts replacement. That's why I wanted the 5001, something to play with. I have enough stuff to watch using my Panasonic...

I'm actually thinking of buying another one, 'cause they have dropped to next-to-nothing in price, and 'cause when it worked, it worked excellently (when transferring dodgy old VHS). Very very good at cleaning up "video grain".
Maybe I will try a replacement burner this time. Do I just remove the old & put in the new, then power up again? Simple as that? -
Go to CDFreaks and look under the Liteon 5001 section. There is a text description for doing a burner replacement. I hear the Sony 730 and 800 work quite nicely and are actually Liteons. The newer 830 however seems to be a Benq and might not work, especially with formatting discs. Also, someone at the forums here was working on a visual guide to doing a drive replacement. You'll have to search for that post though...

I replaced the original burner with an LG 4040B I had lying around and it works fine with +R but will make write errors with Memorex (RicohJapan) 4X +RWs. I'm still looking for a cheap Liteon or Sony drive to replace the original unit with...
