I just got the Samsung R120 recorder. Need to find what DVD-R will work best for it. Is the -RW worth it?
I plan to switch all my VHS to DVDs.
I have heard certain brands work best for certain DVDr.
I got the maxell DVD-R that are made in taiwan. Are they any good? Samsung recommends Maxell.
Thanks for your input!

I would only use Taiyo Yuden DVD-R for the DVD-R format. They can be bought on-line for a fairly good price (considering how good they are) from RIMA.COM
For DVD-RW I have been using Maxell DVD-RW discs that I have bought at WALMART. They come in a 5 pack (with a full DVD case) for only $7.77
DVD-RW is good if you want to copy it to the computer and re-author or for "time shifting" when you plan on watching something once then delete it.

Sony brand DVD+R (made in Taiwan) = SONY media
Sony brand DVD-R (made in Japan) = TY or SONY media
Fuji brand DVD+R (made in Japan) = YUDEN media
Fuji brand DVD-R (made in Japan) = TY media
Verbatim brand DVD-R (made in Taiwan) = MCC media

Maxell brand DVD-R (made in Japan) = MXL media
Maxell brand DVD+R (made in Japan) = MAXELL media
TDK brand DVD-R (made in Taiwain) = TDK media
Pick one. Best Buy, Staples, Office Depot, Walmart, Fry's and OfficeMax are all fine places to pick up some of these discs. About $15-20 per 50 pack on sale. New sale each week it seems.

I"m curious as to why you left off the Sony 8x DVD-R made in Taiwan; I've seen no difference in SONY08D1 made in Japan from that made in Taiwan.

Oversight mostly. That and the fact that I've not seen any Sony DVD-R from Taiwan lately.

I just couldn't pass up the price and needed some discs quick as well.

I have a Samsung R120. I have used the Fuji 2x DVD-RW with great success. I do my editing at the pc level. HOWEVER; just to test my Samsung when I first unboxed it, I ran tests using three brands of DVD-R I had on hand at the time. Sony (SONY08D1), Fuji (TYG02) and Verbatim (MCC 02RG20) all worked for me with no issues.

Hello Onesickpup,
What speed did you recorded on the 3 brand of DVD-R?
In the manual it says 4x but most of todays DVD-R comes in 8x or 16x.
Also do you have issues with the chapters that result in 1 sec glitches every 5 mins?
When did you buy the DVD maybe this issue was on older R120 and have been addressed if you don't see this issue.
Thanks! -
All three of those media types are 8x DVD-R. Honestly, I have no idea what speed the recorder burns at (
Never read enough of the manual to even know!!!)
I pretty much exclusively stick to XP and SP recording mode for most of what I do. With the LSI encoding chip this thing does very well at those rates.
Sorry! Can't answer your question on the chapter glitch you refer to. I have never noticed it, but I cap and then edit on my pc. I don't import any chapter points to the pc. I'll try to watch for it and I'll post back if I find out anything. May be awhile as I don't have any projects going currently.
Almost forgot - purchased my R120 in early September when it was on special at my local Bestbuy. It's not a Pioneer or JVC - but it does a pretty decent job on vhs transfer and digital cable time-shifting in xp and sp modes.
