Hi guys, I need serious help!!

I'm the opposite of all problems. I puchase 2 new DVD burners

    One I/o magic & Sony DRU-800A

Both problem are CANT select LOWER speed.

Always burn at MAX speed (4x) for princo dvd-r
    Only ONE option..the MAX speed.

But my old Pioneer A05, i could select to burn at 1x, 2x, 4x for princo

I did update Sony DRU-800A firmware to KY05. but it does nothing.

Anything i need to know? Do i miss something update?

    i'm using win XP Pro SP2, P4 2.4Ghz, 512RDram, ATi 9600, Gigabyte GA-8ihxp mobo.

    Thanks for the help!

Why? Let it burn at whatever speed it wants to burn. It used to be a case that slower burns were more reliable but with modern drives, rated speed burns are the most reliable.

I would agree with Richard_G; You're more likely to have bad burns if you reduce the speed below the default speed of the drive. You will find that media with speeds below 4X is becoming rare. Drives and media have improved in the last couple of years.

Use better media. PRINCO is crap.
That would also solve the problem.

the problem is that my DVD-r blank are only 1x but sony DRU-800A force to the lowest as 2x and I/O magic DVD burner (which is the worst review i got) force to lowest 4x. So when i burn movies in 4x or 2x even with verification successful with both dvd writers, it doesn't play well on both DVD-rom and stand alone DVD player. those dvd-rs doesn't even read on DVD-rom. on DVD player, it skip alot and the only way to be able to see the picture of the movies by fastforward. That's Crazy!

With these problem, not cause by the disc. I have Ritek or verbatim 1x and give me the same problem.

For the record, Princo 1-2x is one of the best i have use. I have burned more than 3000 copies with those and only have less than 20 errors.where i did some of the errors not the disc. But Yes, Newer PRinco 4x and printable is not as good as before. It gives me 80-90% out of 100 blanks compare to old ones give me 98-99% of 100 blanks.

Well, time to put those old discs in the trash. Buy something new. Plenty of good 4x-16x media around.

Throw out the Princos. They are like the Ford Pinto, Useless!
Your new drives are expecting to be feed good meadia from like 8 to16x not crap that will not burn at anything past 2X
Real TYs are pretty cheap at various sites. No excuse to buy junk any more.

Princos = crap, garbage and wasted time. And really 1x and 2x. Wake up it's 4 years later. I bet you drive a Model T to work?

Some discs will not burn any lower than a certain speed with certain burners. Why are you worried. If you are using TOP quality media you can burn at the rated speed. I don't use anything less than 8x media usually TYs and I can even burn those at 16x without a single error.

If your writer wont write at 1x then you need to trash them because they will all be unplayable.
    Get 8x media at least.

I have the same problem ... bought a ton of 1X DVD-R when they first came out. I no longer use them in the PC because of the same speed-selection problem that you have, but am still able to use them in my Panasonic standalone DVD recorder because it only records at real time 1X speed. Knowing the expensive price of the 1X DVD-R's that I paid, it is hard to just throw them away!

Yep, I keep my old 33RPM LPs for much the same reason. Fortunately I never bought one single 8Track car looper.

An early 1x DVD-R writer off ebay will allow you to burn these but at considerable time cost.

BTW from the +R front, I recently found a 10 pack of 2.4x +R blanks in a drawer and found the Sony 710A recorded them fine although very slowly while I was away doing other stuff.
