  1. Was wandering through Houston Sears when stumbled on these. Don't need any so didn't buy any. Gold-colored DVD on black spindle. Wrap says Made in Japan.

My local Sears only has the Taiwan discs (=RITEKG05).

  3. You could also try finding Made in Japan Maxells at Office Depot or Staples and price-matching. They carry the same 50-packs.

Be careful with Maxell as some of their DVD-R 8X media is now made by CMC Magnetics, some of the worst available.

    Maxell doesn't use CMC.
RITEKG05 (Taiwan) and MXLRG03 (Japan) are the 8x DVD-R right now.

Yes they do. I have 50 8X DVD-R Maxell gold label with the media code of CMCMAGAE1.

I contacted maxell, who tried to tell me that CMC conforms to all their standards! That was all I needed to hear to stop buying anything Maxell.

Are you sure you're not confusing Maxell and Memorex?

I wish. Unfortunately it is Maxell. It's very disappointing to see a formerly good company stoop to making a quick buck selling junk.

Apparently there is more to it than trying to make a "quick buck": http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=20223&highlight=maxell+ritekg05

The fact that they can't make enough discs to support demand, and are resorting to sourcing their product from admitted inferior suppliers to keep up fits the "quick buck" definition to a T don't you think? If Toyota was selling more cars than they could make, and started slapping a Toyota badge on a Yugo...

    I would agree with Grain.
Either ramp up production, expand facilities...
.... or cut back on who gets to carry Maxell media.

Don't buy crap and slap your name on it.

I never knew Maxell as a good digital blank media company. After their wonderful sounding cassettes, and lovely Hi-Fi VHS product, they arrived with fast fading CD-R media. The worst in my collection. So after that I never gave them another chance.

So it sounds like they made (or had made) ok DVD-R for a while. I still stick with TY.

    No biggie here.

Never had trouble with Maxell's CD-R. They're really not too much different than TY CD-R.

Why would Maxell ramp up production for 8x when it's switching the 8x lines it has over to 16x?

You didn't say whether they were MIT or MIJ. If they are MIT, then I can understand the switch to CMC from two angles, (1) increasing production, (2) ditching Ritek before they do any more damage to Maxell's reputation. For many, CMC is starting to be a step above Ritek. Yes, it's that bad.

I would go back to VHS before I would use a CMC disc.
