I recently ordered a 200pk of Taiyo Yuden value 4x dvd-r TYGO1's from supermediastore.com. I recently read somewhere that these are TY's grade B discs, and that they are not as good as there grade A or TYGO2's.
Is this true, or are they just as good? As far as i knew, TY only made one grade, but now im worried that i got there low end discs.

They're labeled "Value Line" discs, but no one has been able to accurately determine what that means. Results people have gotten from them in general are similar to the "premium grade" TY discs.

I often wonder if "Value Line" means they're discontinued and looking to get rid of them at any price. Aren't they transitioning to TYG03 only at the moment?

The problem is the packaging (IMO). Without the stacking ring they have lots of scuff marks on some of the discs...especially tops and bottoms.
That was my experience with the 100 pack I tried. After throwing several away off the top and bottom the middle seemed to be ok and burned at 4X appear to do ok.
My price was about 25 to 30$ at the time and now you can buy 8X TY at Rima for $32.99 /hundred. So for a few dollars more you get the higher quality and much better packaging. IT's worth the extra $5. or so.
The question with the "value line" is still a mystery to me.
How can a company that stopped making a product over a year ago and sold hundreds of thousands or more since... still have enough to stock all you want at most every outlet you choose to buy from. These stores sometimes go out of stock and then a few days later all you want back in stock.
I think someone is still manufacturing the discs. Who? I have no idea.
It's like the cook stopped cooking but the all you can eat buffet is still full of food. ??? -
Manufacturer warehouses can fill up in a pretty short time. But the buyers (companies we buy from) don't necessarily grab more than a few (relatively) at a time.

Even I had ok results with them after tossing a few away due to the shrink wraped shipping. They just dont hold up like the ones with the stacking ring and cake box protector.
Again, just a choice of saving a few dollars or getting better quality.
lordsmurf, I dont think that there are warehouse after warehouse stockpiled with TY G01 discs exposed to the elements waiting to be sold off years after discontinued. And considering how many customers are buying hundreds at a time and this going on all over - from everwhere - the economics doesnt seem very Japanese.
Anyway no biggie...not a concern. I would like to know say if any other company discontinued their 4X line over a year ago and if you could still go out and buy all you want and no sign of stock depletion yet.
Just a little strange to me. -
I think you'd be surprised. Well more than a year after Pioneer (PVC) quit making media, there were huge stockpiles of them to be sold.
My most recent batch of them was purchased 10 months ago, and PVC ended production in late 2003.
And PVC was nowhere near the output of TY.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

It sometimes splits open in shipping and when you receive your shipment and open the box, you find a whole bunch of scratched media loose in the shipping box. The flexible tape that Taiyo Yuden uses doesn't do this. When I say tape, it is wide tape. The width is slightly wider than a spindle of 100 discs is tall. The tape is neatly crimped on the top and bottom of the spindle to hold it in place.
Ignore the postulations, profundity, hyper-mouth speculation and assorted other symptoms of personality deficit disorder that you may read on this issue from some of the participants on this board who are clueless about the facts on this issue but nevertheless like to sound like they know everything about everything. It is just putrefied hot air. I can say this; Taiyo Yudens strategy is already very successful. Their monthly sales of Value Line media is quite a few millions per month and going up fast.
Taiyo Yuden is aware that ALL of the media manufactures in Taiwan are losing money. (Look it up for yourself. These are public companies on the Taiwan stock exchange.) These Taiwan manufacturers are very vulnerable to a marketing attack. And that is exactly what is happening. In business, the best time to kill the competition is when they are weak and these shoddy manufacturers are VERY weak now. If you know how to read a P & L and balance sheet, you can see it for yourself. Their marketing strategy consists of two words Cheap price and it has bitten them in the ass. Their backs are against the wall and they are losing money. Their Coup de Grace is their distain for quality they think it is a joke and a waste of money.
Resellers can buy Value Line Taiyo Yuden media at or even lower in price than Taiwans finest (NOT!) media. So make your choice more of the same old slime or buy some really high quality Taiyo Yuden media. If you do decide to stay with your slime, please try to not take up too much space on this forum whining about your movies freezing and stuff like that. Thats what slime media does. -
I would definitely consider that as a possibility SCDVD.

What is your take on the Burnmaster discs which are advertised as Tayio Yuden OEM media? The price of these discs are nearly the same as traditional Taiyo Yuden discs right now.
http://www.blank-cd-cdr.com/bu2.htmlIt doesn't matter who you vote for. The government always gets in. -
I've used many many spindles of TYG01's, no stacking ring, tape wrapped. Absolutely excellent discs, I burn them at 8X with no issues whatsoever, and with superb PI/PO scans.
-
SCDVD,
Does the TY strategy mean they are still making TYG01's as Value Line media? -
For now, yes but not in the long term. As soon as they deplete their inventory and finish the useful life of their stampers, that will be it for the TYG01 media.
-
I have purchased 400 Ty's 01's from supermedia store. 200 at a time and they said Value on the wrap, yet they code as they premium TY's 02's and could burn up to 8x. Haven't had a coaster out of 200 burns. I also use Verbs, Sony's and FuJi's which are made in Japan and code as TY's 02.

If these are essentially the same discs and there is no difference between between regular and value, then why does TY stamp out the pressed serial number on the hub? All the value line, TYG01 and TYG02 have had the serial crossed out. Clearly, in some way, TY considers these different.
BTW, I have used over 1000 of these and have had no problem. The only scan I have ever managed with zero PIF errors was a TYG02 value disc.Still a few bugs in the system... -

Just another comment that I have tried these ValueLine TY discs and am getting spectacular burns with them, among the best TYG01 I've tried. It'll be interesting to see their longevity, but for now I am quite happy (plus they're great for my older DVD set-top recorder which only burns at 1X anyway; the slower the media the better it seems to want to burn... and/or the firmware only has info for these older type media)

This is probably what they mean by value line. Just some old crap from the factory that could be good or bad. It's like tennis shoes, they have the regular shoes and then the B factory shoes that has certain flaws that may or may not be noticeable. My 2nd spindle that I'm on has no dye bleeding. maybe the other 400 does or doesnt. we'll see.

SCDVD's information about Microboard is correct. I have talked to both TY's midwestern sales office which gave me Microboard's number and Microboard which confirmed they ship TY's Value Line to companies like Supermediastore.

Maybe this belongs in another thread, because I see no indication the discs I'm inquiring about are TY of any stripe . . . however, they are marked as being Made in Japan. But what's the story with SONY08D1 ? Any good ? I bought a 50 pack of these Sony 8X -Rs on sale somewhere (it was probably at Best Buy). I just saw the same-appearing spindle at Staples for $40., but those were marked Made in Taiwan. And I think I paid less than half that price.
I'd also like to find out what it means when you have media that is rated 8x or 16x, but when you query it with DVDInfoPro what you see is "Write Strategy 4x." Sounds (to me) like a strong difference of opinion as to what the media is actually capable of. -
SONY is good media, yes.
Japanese ones are better, but Taiwan quite good too.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

A number of the major brands such as Sony buy their media on an OEM basis from various media manufacturers. Many of these are in Taiwan. Companies like Sony monitor the manufacturing process very carefully. Their name is going to go on it and they want to insure that it is good. In the past, one of the maunfacturers that Sony bought CDR media from was Lead Data. It was pretty decent media because Sony was on site to insure that it was manufactured and tested properly. But in the wake of it, a big scam surfaced. What happened was this. Sony had Lead Data produce the media with Sony's ID on the stamper (the mold used to make the media). There was a substantial amount of media that was rejected by Sony due to high error rates etc. Instead of scrapping it and salvaging the plastic, Lead Data sold this crap to the slime channels. It wound up on the market and was sold as "Sony OEM" by various resellers who are familar to you all. This stuff was major junk which stained Sony's reputation. The sales pitch from the slime merchants sounded something like this. "We habbu Sony OEM media. It berry good. You want buy Sony OEM? We give you berry good price" People bought the media and had problems with it and then blamed Sony for making bad media. If you buy Sony, buy it from a store with Sony's brand name on it. Sony doesn't sell OEM media. Frankly, it would be IMPOSSIBLE to watch some of these characters too closely. Their brains work 24/7 cooking up schemes to relieve people of their money. (A note to brand name companies if you are reading this: Make sure you control ALL of your reject media. IF you don't take ALL the necessary steps to MAKE SURE that it is disposed of, the slimeballs will get a hold of it. When I say make sure, I mean stand there yourself and watch your reject discs melted into plastic. If you just stand there and watch it loaded onto to a truck to be taken away to a plastic slavage operation, the truck will take the media to a slime merchant instead - be sure if it!)
