So I'm giddy about my new little HTPC. Getting it hooked up was slightly annoying, because my brand-new reciever, as nice as it was, only allowed optical audio input on the DVD, CD, and DTV inputs. No problem, I figured - I'll just axe my DVD player altogether, put the output of the computer in through the DVD input, and play DVDs on the computer instead of the DVD player.

The Matrix looked better than ever.

All was well until I invited some friends over to watch some Firefly eps. I popped the first disc in my drive, and the drive didn't so much as recognize it. Tried Disc 2, Disc 3, Disc 4 - Nothing. It seemed to think the drive was empty.

I've got a Lite-On SOHD-16P9S drive in the HTPC. It came with the most current version of the firmware. The drive itself is set to Region 1, so I can't understand why it's not recognizing this disc.

    Help!

Update: Disc recognized fine by my main PC's DVD burner, an NEC-3500AG.

In all likelyhood, the HTPC's DVD-ROM drive simply can't recognize the disc. With no firmware updates, what're my options aside from throwing it in the trash and finding an alternate DVD-ROM drive?

If you havent used search for "dvd's not being detected correctly in pc drives" , then this is what you'll find about .

If you have two dvd units in pc , and one reads and the other dosent , it comes down several problems . These can be simply the unit not able to read needs a clean or replaced , if it can read other dvd discs without problems then the actual disc's themselves are the issue .

There have been a few case's were purchased dvd's have been garbage from the start , and should be returned for replacement .

I have several pc and home units for testing for such discs and if found only 4 out of 9 can read disc , the disc's are returned for replacement or refund .

If you have 2 or more home dvd players you can test the discs on , and all read ok , then it is more likely the dvd drive in the pc , needs a clean , or replaced .

There has also been word about earlier dvd rom drives not being fully compatable with disc's produced from newer units , though I have had this appear once only...

What is the region on the dvd's , if there not region 1 as the drive is set too , this can be an issue , so checkout for firmware hack for liteon unit , it works , unlock the drive region ... here I leave it in unlock state .

As for playing them , most software players will ask what region , and if you sellect it , the software becomes locked to it , and drive is reset ...

Consider , if nero dvd player installed and ac3filters as well , you can run ifoedit , load the main ifo dirrectly from dvd drive , and hit the dvd play button , and enjoy .

Only the main dvd playing software relies on region code , ifoedit dosent .
