  1. Hi

I am trying to convert/encode an .avi file to DVD, using TMPGenc Plus, but there is no sound (picture is fine).

I have read your stickies & other ideas mentioned in your Newbie Conversion forum, using VirtualDub & Goldwave to split the audio into a .wav (which plays back fine), then "add" that into the audio part of TMPGenc, but it makes no difference - still no sound .... The .avi plays fine with video & audio through Windows Media Player, DivX Player & VLC Media Player ... when I try with TMPGenc, it disappears again ....

I used G-Spot on the avi & got this about the audio ...

    Audio Format:
    Code: 0x0055
    Name: WAVE_FORMAT_MPEGLAYER3 (MP3)
    Vendor: ISO/MPEG

The following codecs should both capable of processing this format:

    --> {Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec (advanced)}
    --> {MPEG Layer-3 Decoder}

What (if anything) am I doing wrong?

no sound after you have converted it? on your computer or/and dvd player?
or just convert the audio with something else like ffmpeggui, belight and add the video and audio when you author to a dvd with for example tmpgenc dvd author.

  3. There is sound when I play the "original" .avi, but as soon as I try to encode it (either using "original" .avi audio, or after converting sound using VirtualDub or GSpot), the sound seems to disappear ... I haven't even got as far as burning yet until I can sort the audio out!

    Convert the video with tmpgenc.
Convert the audio to ac3 or mp2 with belight or ffmpeggui.
    Author the video and audio.
    Done.

  5. Isn't that what I did with VirtualDub & GoldWave? Do the 2 you mentioned do a better/diiferent job? Sorry to ask so much ......

  6. Erm ... I just d'loaded those 2 programmes you mentioned & ... neither of them "recognise" the .avi file .... maybe it's corrupt .... weird though that I can play the avi on my computer with sound, and Goldwave & VirtualDub DO recognise it!

Thanks for the help so far, but ... any more ideas?[/b]

  8. Ok, I got ffmpeggui to "get" the file by manually copying the filename & adding it to be converted ... Belight says "can't find BeSweet" or something ... are you saying in your last post that if I convert the avi audio to wav using VirtualDub or Goldwave, do I STILL need to convert that using one of the 2 programmes you suggested? Then, use TMPGenc to encode the video with the mp2 audio?

Please excuse my dimness in this ....

addition: Just tried adding the ffmpeggui audio file to convert & it made no difference - no sound .... I really don't know what to do now ... and the wav's that GoldWave/VirtualDub created played fine.

http://members.dodo.net.au/~jimmalenko/AVI2DVD.htm tells you all you need to know about encoding Video Only with TMPGEnc Plus and the audio with ffmpeggui.

BTW, Belight is a GUI for Besweet, so you need to download Besweet as well

So you can play the WAV file, right ?

Then you use ffmpeggui to convert to ... what, AC3 or MP2 ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

  10. Ok, I'm going to try again ..... Yes the VirtualDub & ffmpeg wavs play back fine ... I'll use your guide to see if it makes a difference. It'll take a while to encode, but I'll let you know - thanks for the help.

This is what I did when TMPGEnc Plus encoded a video with no sound:

I increased the priority of the DirectShow plugin.

To do this, go to 'Option' in TMPGEnc menu.
    'Environmental Setting',
    'VFAPI plug-in',
right-click on 'DirectShow Multimedia File Reader' and choose 'Higher Priority'. Move it to the top.

You should now get sound in all your encodings.
Test it with a small sample of the movie (using 'Source Range' option) before doing the full movie.

    hi CaptainChaos,
Have you manged the conversion? If not, maybe you can have a try on winavi. I used it with the avi to dvd conversion, and it works pretty good.
