Letterbox convert to 16:9 with FairuseWizard?

I have a 50" HDTV and I want to view my XVID movies covering the entire screen. I use older "free" Fairuse Wizard for my conversion. With FW you can adjust the crop of the film manually. Does anyone know what pixels I should select for this crop?

Also, is using the Lancos resizer really worth it?

BTW I'm not trying to get HiDef XVID. I'm trying to crop in FairuseWizard and keep the 16x9 viewing aspect without streching or squishing the image.

Ok so here's what I'm trying now.

It looks like FUW automatically sets to 16x9 or can crop directly to the outside of the film's image. So my theory is to let it do the autocrop to the film edge and bring in the left and right sides the smae distance that FUW brought in the top and bottom. I think that will get me a full 16x9 picture without distortion.

Thoughts?

So you are wanting to convert a WS 4:3 source or wanting to crop a 2.35, 1.85, etc. source back to 1.78?

Either should be possible. It is supposed to look squished though if you are encoding as 16:9 anamorphic, once resized on playback it should look fine, same as with a 16:9 DVD when viewed 1:1 (720x576/480).

As for lanczos, the free version only lets you do 700MB right? It might be overkill for that. The source is however free and it isn't hard to remove the 700MB restriction.

Also, do you know of any online guides that can take me through the process of using anamorphic or even just making the letterbox fit my 16x9 screen in full (no black bars).

I'm starting to think there's probably an app that will edit the DVD to fit the 16x9 screen (with no black bars). Is there?

If you bought your version, you are entitled to the updates to Fair Use Wizard. The latest version is 2.1a. It has a number of nice new features and has a better compression algorithm as well.

Better compression algorithm? If you mean the video codec then presumably you can use a newer codec with the older fairuse?

To convert 2.35, 1.85, etc. to 1.78 you are doing the right thing by cutting the sides. I wouldn't say you are doing the right thing though by converting to 1.78:1, if a film was shot 2.35:1 I would suggest leaving it that way.

Well I figured out the formula for cropping to the 16/9 frame of my TV. Unfortunately, either my TV or DVD player (philips 642) won't display the image correctly. For DVDs I can set the DVD player to 16.9 and set the TV to the wide mode 'Full' and the entire screen is full with the correct sized DVD image (if I'm using a DVD cropped that way). It doesn't seem to work that way when I play Divx or Xvid. If press the Zoom button on the TV, I can get some satisfaction but it's a zoom and not really the right view either. I have a Sony Wega 50 inch LCD projection.

Any ideas?

Get a better DVD/MPEG-4 player. All the ones with the ESS Vibrato chipset suck for playing DivX on a widescreen TV.
