I bought one of these on Amazon and received yesterday. The player works perfect with dvd-r's, but does not want to play a single original standard dvd. When i put one, it starts to make some noises and after a while it gives me the "no disc" message. Can anybody help me or know something about this issue?

That's strange. It must be defective. I'd send an email to Amazon telling them your problem.

Unfortunately, the DVP-642 seems to be plagued by quality issues. I have one that's over a year old and I have no problems with it, but I've read a lot of posts here from people who said that after a few months their DVP-642 stopped working. Although I'm sure this isn't your problem, this player runs hot, so please be sure to have it in an open place with good air circulation or the player will not last very long for you.
I agree that you need to take this up with Amazon, assuming you bought it from them and not a reseller. I will warn you if you bought it from a reseller that Amazon will NOT help you at all in any dispute with a reseller. I had an issue with a mobile phone I once bought from an Amazon reseller and I found out that Amazon really didn't care at all that the phone was not as advertised. They told me basically "Take it up with the reseller and leave us out of it." I ended up having to contact my credit card company and protest the charge and only then did the reseller agree to give me my money back because I could very easily prove that the phone was not as advertised. It was advertised as a tri-band phone and was in fact dual-band. Anyway, if you bought it from Amazon, they'll take it back. If you bought it from a reseller, if you are lucky the reseller will take it back, otherwise you'll have to play hardball and protest the charge with your credit card company. -
Help! I am so frustrated. I also just got one from Amazon. I specifically bought this model to play my dvd-r's. Unfortunately, I go into the 'loading' loop, and the dvd-r's don't play. I've been reading posts looking for possible remedies. Should these play immediately?? Please help!

It could be possible that the files on your dvd-r were encoded with QPEL or perhaps with a too high resolution and the DVP642 will not play these files.
Do these dvd-r's play okay on your computer or on another dvd player?
What happens after you load a dvd-r into the DVP642?
Does it say, "No Disc"? Does it just stop?
If you don't get a "No Disc" message, try hitting the DISC MENU button after it loads. That will give you a menu of the files on the dvd-r. This will tell you if the DVD player recognizes the files or not. -
NKB, be sure your DVD-R is finalized. Avoid using multisession. And use DVD-ROM ISO format.
