I have just transferred a VHS tape to Mpeg2 via Pinnacle Studio
The running time is 1 hour 46 minutes. But the file size is about 5.6 Gig. and Nero won't burn it.
Can I fit this to one DVD or is it less trouble to split the file?
    Thanks

Create the oversized DVD into a folder on your hard drive (using any one of a dozen tools, but I like DVD Lab), and then use DVD Shrink to make it a bit smaller (and fit on a standard DVD-R)

This is an Mpeg2 file on my HD. DVDShrink won't recognise it. Do I have to change it into something else first?

How do I use DVDShrink on the file?

Author it to DVD, but don't compress it (assuming you are using Nero to author). If you don't get an option to author without extra compression being applied, get an authoring tool that will do this (TDA is a good starting package). Once the file is authored, use DVD Shrink to reduce the size.

Better yet, recapture with correct settings so your mpeg file is the correct size, or load the mpeg 2 file into pinnacle (if it will take it) and re-encode it using correct settings.

Sorry, but I am a REAL newbie and really need step by step instructions.
I really appreciate yous guys time in helping, but at the point I am at I need simpler instructions. (You were all there once guys )

If I shrink this file will the quality be affected?

Should I just split it into two files? (I'll need help with that too )

Yes the quality will be effected. For the best quality, capture at the correct bitrate or to a lossless or extremly high bitrate and then shrink. For best quality when shrinking use a good quality MPEG2 encoder rather than a transcoder like DVDShrink or Rejig. I mention ReJig since unlike DVDShrink it can shrink your mpg file.

We may have all been "there" once, however not all of other expected answers handed to us on a plate. You need to search, read, etc. to find answers.

For instance someone suggest authoring and then shrinking. Now whilst there might not be a guide on that I am sure that you can find a guide for authoring and a guide for shrinking. Just combine the two.

You have to appreciate that we all have different learning curves. You have to have a little more patience with the slower learners like myself.

Computerized video work a complex diverse hobby.

Lots of us do search the net for guides, but a lot of the guides are written by people who think we are all computer techies.

That's why we come here for help.(To the Newbie section)

You don't say which version of pinnacle you are using, so I'll asuume something xurrent (OK, big assumption, I know). You should be able to output a completed DVD structure from within this package. The process of generating this is called authoring. It usually includes the crearion of menus, adding chapter points etc. You need to take your captured video through to this point, using pinnacle if that's where you feel most comfortable. I don't use this package, so I can't give any extra help other than to say that help files and manuals are your friend.

Once you have theDVD on your hard drive (it will have a folder called Video_TS and a pile of files in it - .ifo, .bup, .vob), you can use DVD Shrink to reduce the size to something that fits on a single disk.

When you are authoring, look for an opportunity to reencode down to a better size. The quality will generally be higher if you do it then, rather than transcoding later with Shrink.
