Hi there.
I'm sure that this topic has been up here before. But I didn't manage to find what I looked for then I tried to search. I hope it's okey.
I've some Xvid files on my PC with subs, but my DVD-player doesn't support Xvid. It only supports svcd, divx or dvd -/+. So what should I do with these Xvid files if I want to watch them on my DVD? How can I transform them into either Divx, svcd or DVD? What is best? And can I get my subs at the same time when I burn them?
Thanks for all kind of help!

Xvid and Divx are both MPEG4 codecs. Most hardware that supports one supports the other. There are some features of both codecs that aren't supported by some set top players: GMC, QPEL, very high video bitrates, very low audio bitrates, etc.
Some players just don't recognize the XVID fourcc code (the identifier that indicates what codec to use to decode the video). If that's the case for your player, the first thing to try is a fourcc changer that will change the fourcc code from XVID to DX50 (Divx 5 and 6).

Many xvid's are done with "packed bitstreams" and these cause most cheaper standalones to stutter. These can easily be unpacked with MPEG4modifier without reencoding.
Use Gspot to see if your xvid's has
packed bitstream - use mpeg4modifier
GMC and QPEL - has to be reencoded (to avid/divx/dvd/whatever) -
DivX also uses packed bitstream by the way. It is the multiple consecutive bframes and packed bitstream that was the issue with MTK chipsets. A lot of players have gotten firmware fixes for it though. So it shouldn't be an issue any more.

Oh, didn't know that Xvid and Divx was almost the same thing. But if I want to burn my subs as well, is it somehow I can get my subs on the DVD?

Most of the popular Divx/DVD players will overlay SRT or SUB subtitle files. You'll have to check your players specifics but in most cases just give the subtitle file the same name as the AVI file:
movie.avi
movie.srt
The press the subtitle button on the remote control while playing the AVI file. -
Thank you!
And one last question
Should I burn the files on a normal DVD -/+ or on a CD-r? -

I see, I'll try and see what happens. Is it okey to burn everything in Nero? The movie and the sub file?
I'll try to see if my dvd-player supports this, hopefully it does.
Thanks! -

I tried to burn today and everything was OK, the subs worked but the picture was black and white. I tried to burn on a DVD+r disc, but does this mean that my player doesn't support MPEG4 codecs? Or what could I've done wrong? Can I change between Pal and NTSC on the files before I burn?
