I always have the problem of getting to the video store and not knowing if a flick is supposed to be any good. I have often come home with films that I wish I could return for my money. I use rottentomatoes for movies in theaters, but it doesn't really have a good way of picking good flicks that are out on video and likely to be in my local shop. It would be nice if there was a site that I could enter recent release, made in usa (that is about all my local shop carries), with about a 80% positive reviews and have a list with about 20 films popup. Any suggestions?

I think the secret would be to find a video review site that has similar tastes to yours. There are a lot of movies the critics loved that I thought sucked. A few I ended up fast-forwarding, hoping for improvement that never happened. Even a couple of Academy Award winners.

Many sites like Netflix will give you reviews on videos, but it's just their opinion. They are probably right most of the time, but many very good independent and foreign videos are passed over. Try to find your compatible review site and make a list.

I like this site because it compiles reviews from just about everywhere. But It doesn't have a very sophisticated way of sorting.

    For movie reviews, www.filmcritic.com

Like 'em or leave 'em I find the reviews helpful. I never take any critics word at face value and always read between the lines. If they're good critics they explain why they liked or disliked the movie, which helps you make up your own mind.

It is good but is mainly for subscribers. I use www.GenreOnLine.net quite a lot. It has often warned me if a DVD is a complete 'clunker'. The guy used to post his reviews in various newsgroups but self-appointed netcops falsely accused him of 'spamming' so he doesn't do it any more.
