Playback captioning problem Ilo DVDR04

I've got a problem that has me pulling my hair out.

I'm trying to hook up a new DVD recorder and require closed captioning.

Because the TV doesn't have the inputs, I have connected the DVD unit to the VCR.

(The DVD recorder is an Ilo DVDR04 and the VCR is a Sharp.)

The TV supports CC just fine.

The VCR supports CC, records and passes them to the TV.

The DVD recorder passes no captioning on to the TV (via the VCR). It does, however, record them onto DVD, so there appears to be no question that the DVD unit's tuner supports CC. (The DVD recorder has no control for CC nor does the manual mention it).

I know the captions are recorded because they're there when I play a recorded disk back on my laptop.

I have also tried recording from the DVD unit to the VCR. No captions.

This seems so darned elementary that I'm a little embarassed to even ask the question, but does anyone here have any idea what I'm missing? This should work, shouldn't it?

Does the recorder by any chance record close captions as subtitle ? So while playing you would need to turn on subtitle like on commercial DVD.... Just a thought...

One more thing.... I believe that ILO and LiteOn are close relatives and in these posts there are some indications of how it behaves...

I have subtitles enabled and set to english, by default, but I don't think it does any converting. I have no difficulty getting subtitles to work from DVD's. If they contain true closed captions, however, the unit won't display them.

That was a good try, though! Thanx. Any other thoughts?
