I have two files I'm not sure what to do with because I don't have a DVD recorder.

    1. DVD vat file on my hard drive - how do I convert it or encode it so I can burn a VCD? or do I have to burn it as a data file?

    2. A DVD iso file? How do I get it in a format so I can burn a VCD?

    Thanks

Vat file? Not sure what that is.

An ISO file can be extracted with ISOBuster or viewed with Daemon Tools. If it's a MPEG-2 DVD, and you want to go to VCD, you would have to convert it to MPEG-1 with 44Khz audio. Look at VCDEasy as it works well with VCD format.

There is also the SVCD format, if you can play it with your settop. It has better resolution than VCD and plays on most settop players. It's already MPEG-2 so there is a little less conversion and you can use the 48Khz DVD audio. I used that before I moved to DVD. For SVCD, I used DVD2SVCD and preserved most of the DVD quality. You need a good encoder for best quality, though.

If you are in doubt about what format your videos are, try checking them with AVICodec or Gspot. Once you know what you have, look to 'Convert' to the left for programs and methods. <<<<

Sorry, the extension on the DVD file is .ratDVD.

I'm not sure what kind of file that is as my experience is mainly with VCDs.

Thanks for your suggestions on the .iso file. I've just never gotten around to working with them.
