  1. Probably a ridicolous question but all the same:

Will a DivX Certified DVD Player always manage to play XivD encoded files?
According to what is stated on www.divx.com players with this certification will always be backward and forward compatible - but what about Xvid encoded files? Will these work all the same?

    Thankful for any answers.

No. Divx certified players won't play all Divx files either.

There are features of each codec than can used that set top players are not required to handle in order to be certified. GMC, QPEL, even frame sizes over 720x480 for example.

A player simply may not recognize the XVID fourcc code (the flag that indicates what type of video compression was used) as something it can handle. In these cases you can often use a fourcc changer to change the code.

The type of audio compression used can make the player refuse to play the file. Or play it without audio. Most players won't play MP3 audio with very low bitrates.

Most of the players won't play files over 2 GB because most players require ISO format -- and ISO has a 2 GB file size limit.

  3. Audio is the main/Big problem with these players also the 2 gig limit like junkmalle said. I havent had a Xvid not play, I HAVE had many Divx NOT play, I was keeping in with the Audio Specs to.

My take on it.........Dont worry about it, Just keep in mind the 2 gig limit and the Audio

DivX certified players will playback anything that is encoded to spec. So Home Theatre profile, avi/divx container, mp3 audio, etc.

XviD or DivX should make no difference as long as it is within spec. As said it is just as possible to generate DivX encodes that won't playback as it is XviD ones.

Same goes for other ASP MPEG-4 encoders to. Nero Digital, libavcodec, 3ivX, HDX4, etc.
