I am able to play my AVI file with WMP without any problem. When I try to access the audio information with VirtualDub, I see under the "File Information" item under the "File" pulldown that the Audio Stream Compression is "Unknown (Tag 0055). I cannot decompress this with VirtualDub (nor anything else). It seems to me that the MS WMP is using some internal MP3 codec that is not available to "other" non-MS programs like VirtualDub and Goldwave. Is there any way to fix this? I have installed all the possible MP3 codecs but still this persists. Anyone know how to this can be rectified?

You probably have that exactly right about MS. Maybe .asf audio?

Virtualdub can't open it unless you use the really old versions before MS put a stop to it. If so, look here:

    I'd GSpot it.
    If in doubt, Google it.

0055 is indeed mp3 and windows comes with an ACM mp3 decompressor that should work fine with VDub. You haven't been installing codec packs or something?

I say save yourself the headache and just use avi2wav to rip the audio.

No, I haven't installed any codec packs or anything like that. This is about the third time in recent months that I have bumped into this problem...everytime before, I have just given up. Thought this last time I would come here and search for the answer. There are several other people here that have reported this...and in every case that I found here on these forums, there was never any way to resolve this issue. I have the LAME ACM MP3 and the Frauhauffer MP3 codec and one or two others. I will take up the suggestion about avi2wav to hopefully alleviate this problem. Thanks for all the suggestions. I appreciate the help although I still believe that there is a problem here that maybe the author of VirtualDub might look into. Just my 2 cents worth...again thanks.

Don't think that lame ACM includes a decoder.

Right you are!!! Okay...where do I find a proper MP3 decoder that is acceptable to VirtualDub?

Fraunhauffer...great...I am running XP-SP2 with all the latest updates. How to I convince VirtualDub that the Windows version of Fraunhauffer is indeed really there?
