    Hello,

I'm extremely frustrated because I have been attempting for a week and a half to successfully rip video off of DVDs (which I own) and turn it into a mpeg or any other type of file that can be read by Final Cut.

The ripping program I have been using (since it seems to be the standard) is Mac the Ripper, though I have also tried using OSex. Among the programs I've tried using to covert to mpegs are DVD2oneX, OpenShiva, and MPEG Streamclip.

I will lay out my problem is simple terms, and then go into details in response if necessary. BASICALLY, what is occuring over and over, with many combinations of programs and many types of DVD rips (e.g. Full Disk, Main Feature, Individual Chapters) is that I'll end up with VOBs or MPEGs that are video only WITH NO SOUND.

I assume that this has something to do with the fact that when I rip (with MacTheRipper), I get separate Audio and Video folders. That would explain why, when I attempt to open the VOBs I get from the program in Final Cut, there is image but no sound. WHAT I CAN'T FIGURE OUT is why I can't get what I want using one of the secondary programs. With OpenShiva, I get files that have no audio, with DVD2oneX, I use the Movie Only mode and what it gives me is another set of VIDEO and AUDIO folders. Again, if I attempt to open the video files, there is no audio attached/referenced.

Is this making sense to anyone? Please let me know if you need any clarification.

Any insights would be much appreciated. FYI, I'm using a G5 DP with OS 10.4.

    THANK YOU!

  2. You probably have VOBs with AC3 audio which QuickTime and , therefore, FinalCut PRO cannot decode it...You have to rip your DVD in separate streams /video and audio/ and then convert AC3 audio to .aiff ot .wav...Or you can separate streams from ripped VOB with AC3 audio using the MPEG Streamclip which can rip AC3 to .aiff...Or you can convert ripped VOB to .mov with audio for later editing also with MPEG Streamclip, Cinematize or Export2QT apps...

  3. If you use VLC to play the vobs resulting from the MTR rip, do you get sound? The Audio_TS folder is meant to be empty, since ripping only copies the multiplexed footage. DVD2ONEX will also porduce an empty Audio_TS folder, but again, VLC should be able to play the vobs with sound.

willrob, in answer to your question, the Audio_TS folders ARE empty, and I AM able to play both the MTR and DVD2oneX products with VLC. Does this tell you anything?

SERBIAN, thank you very much for your help. If you don't mind my asking a quick follow-up: what would you recommend as the best way to convert my AC3 to .aiff or .wav? Do I have to isolate the audio and convert it, or is there a way that I can process the files such that I will end up will a single file that I can open in Final Cut with image and sound.

Also, I would love to be able to make these into mpeg2 or even mpeg4. Any advice on that?

    Thanks, this is much appreciated.

Since Im the developer of last mentioned app in my previous post /ExportToQT/ and since my app and rest of the mentioned apps can do both things you lookin for, I suggest that you try freeware MPEG Streamclip first /my app and Cinematize are sharewares/....That app should do what you lookin for...If it fails then try both, Cinematize and my app(s), and decide what you should use...

Also please note that if you wanna edit your files in real time using FinalCut PRO then you have to convert your MPEG2 files /which VOB is/ to some real time QuickTime format like DV/DVCPRO or something else depending on your Mac power...Anyway convert it in a format which will match your sequence setting in FCP...

Also, I would love to be able to make these into mpeg2 or even mpeg4. Any advice on that?
Since VOB files are MPEG2 files allready /with some extra things within it/, you dont have to re-convert them - just rename them in .mpg instead of .VOB and you will have perfectly good MPEG2 movie playable in any app that supports MPEG2 format...

I hope I clarified the things to you a little...

Awesome -- thank you so much for all of your help SERBIAN.

I've been using MPEG Streamclip and exporting to .mov's with great success.
