What Causes this?

I recently recorded a show on my Motorola 6412 and transferred it to my pc, when viewing the .ts file with vlc at the very top of the video there is a line that is all scrambled/distorted, what causes that?

Also why are the files natively in transport stream format?

are all tv recordings scrambled? some video may be distorted but you wont see it on the tv because of overscan http://www.digitalfaq.com/dvdguides/capture/understandsource.htm#overscan

Seems like you must be transferring an analog channel or a DVR recorded analog channel through the IEEE-1394 port. Correct?

The top lines are normally masked by TV set overscan. These "vertical interval" lines contain the data for closed captions, test signals, plus the data that allows your TV to display the channel call letters and program name. Other space is locally sold to data services such as stock transaction streams or even internet access downloads in some markets. PBS channels include atomic clock time sets for VCR or other clock systems.

If it was originally an analog channel, it isn't natively TS. Your 6412 is converting it to a TS stream. If the conversion is like my 6200, the conversion is poor and you are much better off viewing or recording from the S-Video port if it is a live recording. Once you record to the DVR, you are stuck with TS data. S-Video will be just as bad.

Actually, I get far better quality from analog cable channels by avoiding the set top box and using an analog tuner such as the 3D comb filter decoder in my HDTV (analog tuner) or my All-in-Wonder card.

Analog NTSC if recorded from a two digit Comcast channel. The vertical interval data "lines" are only present on the analog channels.

Now you have me confused. The 6412 DVR records to HDD and then plays out in analog or TS over the IEEE-1394.

Describe how you are reading these streams and please restate your question..
