I'm new also, and embarking on a similar project. You've got a lot of reading and learning to do. There a large number of excellent guides with detailed instructions in the "How To CONVERT" section in the left column. I suggest that you start reading and experimenting using the guides and then ask specific questions when you get stuck. People are pretty helpful around here if youi put in a bit of effort to learn. The guides recommend good programs to start with, but as you learn more you can experiment with similar functioning tools in the "Tools" Section. Your head is going to hurt, but it does get better after a while.

I started with "Sefy's Original Guide AVI to VCD" and learned a ton of stuff really fast. Some stuff didn't work the way it was advertised (had trouble using Headac3he, but Virtualdub can extract a decent WAV with the AC3ACM plug-in), but that's what questions in the forum are for. By the time you've worked through the guide you'll be a lot smarter than when you started.

    Good Luck.

  3. I give up. Everytime I put in the dvd to my player it freezes. Ive tried 3 tools already all with the same output. No its not my DVD player, cuz everytime I play it off my computer it freezes and its lesser quality it looks like! Converting AVI's sucks! Specially dvix/xvid ones

Conversion is simple, it just takes awhile to learn what the hell you are doing.

First, if the file doesn't even play properly on your computer, then it sounds like it is corrupt and isn't worth the effort to convert.

Second, conversion to DVD, VCD, or SVCD are each different as the specs for each format or different. Also, not all standalone DVD players are able to play VCD/SVCD. So you need to know what products you standalone supports.
