why do they exist, and how can you stop it. the idea that my laptop can never change regions again is just bloody rediculous. it's not happened yet, but it's only a matter of time..... is there code to get over it?

Google would tell you that regions exist so that commercial DVDs can be relesed regionally. Both timing of release and content can thus differ by local region.

You stop it by refusing to buy DVDs.

    ?

you can use VLC to play DVDs from other regions, or find a patch for the drive in your laptop.

  4. Yeah the newest version of VLC does a nice job of dvd playback even having a lot of the menus function 100%

So if you cant hack your drive to be region free VLC may be a quick and dirty solution

Not if hes got a drive UJ-825 and up...no hope there. I just would use another comp to rip ur dvds and make em region free, or get a FW case and a pioneer dvd writer that can be RPC1.

If enough people refused to buy region encoded DVD's, they would stop the region restrictions.

    that would take :
    A LOT of public awareness
    and
    A LOT of PEOPLE!

the average joe who buys his DVDs at Wal-Mart wouldn't care about this plight!

I am from region 3. DVD shops here are selling region 1 DVD and claiming they are of better quality. DVD "region code free" player is a must have. Go to cdfreaks and see if there is a hack to make your DVD Rom region free.

Considering this is non-issue for 99% of DVD consumers, I'd imagine any resistence to region coding would be futile.
