Taking ages

It takes me about 4 hours to convert a normal avi to dvd via this prog and this is the only 1 I can get too work.

Can anyone help me find out why this is taking so long?

I have win xp sp2 on an xp3200+ with 512mb ddr 400 memory and 120g & 200gb h/ds with plenty space left.

Please help because I keep reading of folk doing this very quickly and don't undestand what I am doing wrong?

Could this be codec related?I am using the Kazaa lite codecs...

It certainly shouldn't take that long. Have you tried other avi's - the one you have may be "Unusual". Maybe a defrag could help.

Seems a reasonable question if the general consensus take 40-50 mins and it takes 4-5 hours on mine (esp. as other software doesn't work) that I wonder why.

No this is the normal story with all avis I've used (all diff codecs etc.).

Well it depends on the duration of the avi. I would say real-time encoding should be achievable at least for you. i.e. a 2 hour avi should take no more that 2 hours and a 1 hour avi should take no more that 1 hour.

If you are not getting close to this then (assuming your disks are not hopelessly fragmented), you may have a rouge avi file… is this consistent over several avi files you have tried?

Yeah every one for the last couple of years (and had a few lol!)

Thats why I was wondering if it was either the codecs or maybe a memory problem, becuase the pc is fine with all other software...

FYI, codecs are not an issue with SVCD2DVD - it doesn't use any!

Logs are in "C:\Program Files\BadgerIT\SVCD2DVD v2\logs" by default but may vary depending where you installed the software.

Guess it wasn't obvious enough.

In order to make time calculations, length of AVI, type of AVI, resolution of AVI, and bitrate selected, among other things, would be needed for comparison.

You need to give more information. That was the point of my earlier post.

Also, the Kazaa lite codec pack has been a source of extreme problems for many people. If a program is re-encoding an AVI, that AVI is being decoded by a codec of some sort, unless of course it is uncompressed. The codecs included in that codec pack often cause issues such as you are experiencing, among numerous other problems.

I was just giving a generalisation Nelson.thanks for the info.

I am now managing to convert and burn in about 2 1/2 hours (burning at 4x).

Example is a PAL avi 1h 37min and 37 secs in duration and 698mb in size.It is 512x288.

All settings are default and I am in a PAL area so do not need to re-encode.

So is this a reasonable time compared to others?

I need to point out that I am over the moon with this prog as no other one works and this nearly always does.

It’s not too bad. HD spec is important here....

I would say that we would need to know more about your setup to comment further:

- HD speed (5400, 7200 or more!), cache size
- What’s your fragmentation/fragmentation strategy?

In general that time is not bad but I have a slower computer than you and I get real time if not better!

I have 2.8 CPU but I defrag every night and have a 7200rpm 8MB cache HD….

My HD is a SATA 7200 with 8mb buffer.It is brand new so not needed to defrag as such.

BTW have started getting a lot of errors with ffmpeg.exe encountering an unkown eror.Is there a common root cause for this or could it be one of many things?

Well thanks for the pointer Chris.

Had found that un-installing and re-installing svcd2dvd has allowed me to `fix` problems, but now find that the iso it creates won't burn in dvd decryptor because it seems to think it is a cd-rom iso?Same happens with Nero...
