    Greetings,
I was doing some research on the BenQ DW1640, which by almost all accounts seems to be an exellent drive. I was looking at Pricegrabber.com and there was a user review of this drive that said the following:
"Weaknesses: Doesn't work with an enclouser [sic] kit
Summary: After talking to BenQ, I found out that using this drive in an external enclouser [sic] is not a supported configuration for this drive (or DW 1600 and 1620). I had to return it and buy NEC which worked like a charm."

Has anyone else had this experience and spoken to BenQ and gotten the same answer? Or has anyone else heard this anywhere?

I'm thinking it might be an issue with an older enclosure with an older ribbon cable without shielded wires. These cables don't work well with newer, high-speed drives. Or maybe its the chipsets in some enclosures. I can't imagine what else it could be. Anybody?

Here is the answer from BenQ support to an email I sent:
"This is type of question that needs to be directed to manufacturer of external enclosures."
Either the guy on Pricegrabber.com was making up stuff, or he talked to somebody different than the guy who answered my email.
At least according to this email, BenQ doesn't really have a position on this subject.

Just get another opinion from them, I asked BenQ once again. This time I quoted the review on Pricegrabber.com.
    This time their reply was:
"External enclosures are not an [sic] supported configuration for any of our drives."

So, from one extreme to the other, I guess.

read that thread from BENQ FORUM.

my understanding is to have the BENQ 1620 work in a external case is to use a brand called PLUMAX. i'm not sure about the 1640 but you could post your question there.
