I just re-did my computer (formated w/ fresh install of XP SP2) and installed Codecs6027_allin1 from www.codecpack.com... which I had on my system prior to the re-formatting.
All the hardware and software is the same as before... but now, when I try to play any videos (AVI, MPG, etc), all I get is a black screen and audio. WMP actually resizes to accomidate the video size... just doesn't show anything.
I've tried uninstalling the codecpack and installing the needed codecs individually, but no luck. Also, after I installed the codecpack the first time, I lost the ability to watch WMV and ASF files. WMP closes with an error when I try to play them. I've uninstalled WMP 10 twice and reinstalled it 3 times.
This happen last time I re-did my computer and I can't remember how I fixed it.
Please help!
PS- Forgot to metion, I can't play the videos with Quicktime, VuePrint or VLC Media Player either. Same problem, audio only. Codec Sniper, Gspot and Sherlock say there are no problems and codecs are installed and working.

I had already tried that.
I had unistalled the codecpack and then checked with Sherlock and Codec Sniper. I was clean. I then installed the divx codec and tried it out. Still no video on my divx movies and WMV and ASF were still not working. -
have you tried installing the newest direct show filter? I think you can find it in the tools section of this site. Also, try the latest xvid build instead of the divx codec.

It had something to do with divx and wmv being similar or something(?) and the problem was that they were installed in the wrong order. What I mean is that the wmv was installed before the divx (or was it the other way around?). Anyway, I uninstalled wmp and it's codecs, installed divx, reinstalled wmp and it all sorted itself out. It came as a shock to me that the order codecs are installed in would make such a difference, but it's a shot in the dark.
If it doesn't work, good luck to ya. I'm fresh out of any other ideas. -

You sure your copy of divx is not a corrupted file? Have you tried downloading an alternate copy from somewhere else? Do you have the latest version of divx? Or maybe you need an earlier version as it may conflict with other stuff on your comp?
Have you tried googleing this problem? -
I've googled this problem and I have tried searching and posting on several forums, to no avail. Remember, it's not just divx that I'm having problems with. It's everythings: xvid, divx svcd, vcd, vob, wmv, asf.....

What a curious problem.
Can you play any video at all? Can you play quicktime movies through quicktime? Can you play flash movies off the net? What if you re-installed quicktime and let it take over defaults for all extensions?
Video card issues maybe? -
I figured out the problem :P
I ended up re-doing my system over again and before I even installed any codecs, I checked to make sure that wmv would play... and they wouldn't. I hadn't installed anything yet, except all the newest drivers for my hardware. I then unistalled the newest drivers for my videocard (nvidia 6800 Ultra) and I was able to play wmv's again!
So I went back to an older driver and now have no problems. -
I was going to post again about it possibly being the drivers but a pm distracted me. Glad you sorted it out.
