any programs that can automatically start to capture after the windows xp start.

i can place it in my start up but, is there a program that automatically start capturing when it is loaded and stop capturing after a 1 hour and maybe also shutdown windows xp?

my plan is this, i will let my pc start buy itself(maybe via bios setting) when it reach a certain time when im not at home, automatically start and logon to windows xp, start the capture program, and the capture program start capturing immediately, after the tv show is over after 1 hour, it will automatically shutdown my pc...

That you can definitely do. WinDV can be accessed via the commandline, or you could write a macro for just about any capturing program using MacroMagic or similar tools.

That is just plain ambitious. Short of some sort of robot to physically depress the power button, or alternatively if you have dialup then you could have the "Wake on Modem Ring" setting enabled on your motherboard, and then ring your phone line connected to the modem and it might cause it to startup on its own. I can't think of any other way. Then you could set your PC to login automatically using the AutoAdminLogon registry setting, and then have a macro or batch file in your startup. I don't think there's any way to set a time for your computer to power up though.

The easiest part of all this is getting your PC to shutdown when it's done.

... or you could just leave your PC on most of the time, and use scheduled tasks with macros to start, stop and shutdown.
    If in doubt, Google it.

thanks a lot for suggesting those programs. those are the programs i think i need...your suggestions solved my main problem.

I don't think there's any way to set a time for your computer to power up though. <<< i was able to do this through bios. there is an option there where you can set the time when your pc will power up you just let your pc plug to a power outlet

i was also able to make a visual basic program that can shutdown my pc at a given time. i lost my codes though and i need to research on it again...

You should be able to bring it out of standby, instead of actually starting it up from cold. This has the advantage of not having to log in.

Standby consumes virtually no power, with the fans etc being shutdown and the CPU down to bearest vitals. It is the standard state of laptops when the case is closed. If configured to do so, you can bring your PC out of standby with a key press or mouse click. Many HTPC setups that can record go into standby mode while waiting, come out to record, then go back to standby.

Any computer that can be turned on via software will consume electricity as long as it's plugged in. As far as power consumption, I don't think there is any difference between turning it off (while leaving it plugged in), or putting it in standby.

Electricity is cheap enough that I don't care enough to be bothered by the small amount my computer uses so I just leave it on all the time.
