On the strength of many positive reviews of the OPPO Divx DVD Player, model OPDV971H, which plays/supports DIVX files (DivX 5, DivX 4, DivX 3, DivX VOD) and XviD (and .SRT, .SMI, .IDX and .SUB formats), I ordered one today and should receive it within the week.

Usually I would use ffmpegX to export AVI/MPG/MOV files to DVD. However, with the OPPO player en route, I figured I would start converting anything not already in the DivX or XviD format to either format for playback on the OPPO DivX DVD player -- no sense making a 700MB file into a 4GIG file for playback if I can put 6*700MB files onto one DVD instead.

Well, I've got a week I can use to begin converting files. No guarantee anything I convert will work once I get the player, that is -- unless major or someone else has or has used the OPPO player.

Anyone have a suggestion RE: which pre-set would be best to use for playback on the OPPO player?

Tech specs on the player are available here:

And more info, specifically about the DivX player portion is here:

    Thanks so much!

It’s says it handles Q-pel (quarter pixel motion estimation), which most set-top boxes don’t. Sometimes you run into a DivX file that was encoded with that setting, so it’s nice to know that won’t be a problem. Looks like a fine player.

At first glance, any of the XviD and DivX presets should be fine. But you may want to test the results, before converting dozens of movies.

Seems the player will be here tomorrow, so yeah, best to just wait and do some tests when it arrives. I'll post a report on DivX/XviD playback, in the event anyone else is interested in this player. Sounded pretty sweet...great alternative to turning everything into a DVD or having to have a media control center, that's for sure.

  4. Any news on this player's performance? I'm considering buying one and would like your feedback there eh. Thanks.

I'm actually waiting on a unit to get back from Oppo -- the initial one sent by HKFlix had a problem with its laser. Thankfully Oppo has been very quick about investigating the problem and a new unit is en route.

Anyway, I DID learn something of interest to DivX people with regard to this player. I asked what resolutions were best, DivX vs. XviD, etc. and this is the reply I got:

"Here are the supported Divx resolutions:

    720x480, 720x576, 704x480 704x576, 352x240 and 352x288"

Basically, anything outside these resolutions would be problematic. (At least that's the word so far.)

When the new player finally gets here, I'll have a report on its performance.

  6. Thanks for the udpate MV, I look forward to hearing more

Edit - are those resolutions you mentioned there just for divx or are they for xdiv too? If so my God do I have a lot of transcoding to do lol

i have had the oppo for a few weeks, and those resolutions are very problematic.

99% of my XVIDs are outside those resolutions and what oppo calls 'non standard'. the problem is that the oppo plays them, but fills my 4:3 tv with vid, and therefore stretches it to fit and makes it totally unwatchable.

i guess the confusing part, the function to change the type of TV (not NTSC vs PAL, but wide vs fs) does not work while playing an XVID, but WILL work (change the screen dimensions) while playing a normal, uncompressed DVD. So i converted all my dvds using the wrong resolution...great.

Yeah, the player also automatically stretches the image on 4:3 / 3:2 resolution DivX files. For files that are 16:9, however, I find the quality to be quite good regardless of DivX or XviD format.

I've run a fair share of tests at all resolutions and the image quality is as good as it is on my computer monitor as it is on my larger television -- adjusted, of course, for a larger TV and it's generally lower resolution.

Because I'm not a huge fan of watching things on my computer, I've found that the player really solves that problem for me. And by keeping the files as DivX / XviD, I'm naturally able to put a lot more content on a DVD than I'd be able to if I converted them to VOBs, quality is generally the same -- and I can use the very same DVD as my backup.

Of course, the image stretching is a problem. Thankfully I'm helping Oppo test out the player's DivX/XviD support, and this type of information helps them make firmware updates. Hopefully it's something we'll see in the not-too-distant future. =)

  9. I hope so, if they can prevent oddities with stretching or provide a good way to control scaling in a functional, yet easy way, it would be a great thing for all DivX and XviD files. That would make it worth my $200 at least

oppo does respond quite quickly through email, and indeed stated that a firmware upgrade could fix the problem, and that their engineers were specifically working on the XVID resolution problem, but could not off any sort of time frame.

why do you suppose the video function does not work with an XVID, but works on a regular DVD?

    thx

  11. Ouch, no Divx/Xvid HDTV support, pass.
