Hello,
I downloaded an mpeg of a music video that was about 10 minutes in length. I burned it to a cd-rw with Nero (because my stand alone dvd player will only play cd-rw's) and the burn process looked fine. When I tried to play the disk, the player only showed the initial frame and gave an error message when the "play" button was pushed on the dvd player. I was finally able to burn it to a dvd, but never could get a cd-rw to work. Any thoughts on what I did wrong? Thanks for any info.

Much more information required.
How did you burn it ? as data ?
Maybe your player only plays raw MPEG on DVD ?
Can your player play raw MPEG at all ?
Maybe your DVD player didn't like that particular CD-RW ?
Maybe your burner didn't like that particular CD-RW ?
Did it play on your PC ?
mpeg file - MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 ?
What player were you using ?
and I could go onIf in doubt, Google it. -

You also need to change your post title.
It should be a few words that describe your problem.
"Very "newbie" type question" is inappropriate.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

OK ...... let me rewrite your OP then ....

If we knew the model of your DVD player, we could look it up in the DVD Players section (to your left) to see what other people have managed to play in it.
I take it that you just loaded up the MPEG file in Nero, and let it encode and author to VCD for you, as well as burn ?If in doubt, Google it. -
Thanks for the info Jimmalenko. I figured my issue had to be very simple (operator error) so I tried to be as brief as possible. I had no idea one problem could have so many possibilities, so again, I thought being as brief as possible was the way to go. I will make sure in the future that I am more descriptive.
As far as the player only playing cd-r/w's. The owners manual said it will not play cd-r's, so I took a shot on cd-r/w's and got lucky.
And yes, I dropped the file into the Nero program and let it do everything.
Thanks again. -

A simple "more detail, please" may have done just as well. Sometimes it is difficult for a newcomer to know what is relevant and what is not. I remember how bewildering it all was when I first looked at making a VCD.

I have to agree with Cobra. When I first started, I didn't have a clue what to ask, let alone what information to provide. I've been burning and editing for two years now, and I feel like I'm just scratching the surface still...

You tell me.... I'm doing this things 7 years now, and I still learning some basics....

Is it not better (and a lot more helpful for both the OP and anyone else who reads the thread) to ask a heap of specific questions that the OP can answer that will help everyone out in trying to work out the issue, without leaving it up to the OP's (confused) discretion as to what information we need to know ? We can't see his screen from here, and he doesn't know enough about the subject to know what we want or need to know, so since when has asking specific questions been detrimental to the forums ?
Here's a good example:

Now if I respond with "More information please", the first question that runs through the OP's mind is "what further information does he want to know ?". Now if I detail what I want to know in the form of specific questions, is this not a lot more pro-active and helpful for everyone's benefit ? The OP obviously doesn't know what other information is helpful, otherwise they would have presented it in the first post.If in doubt, Google it. -

Let's forget about all this sidetracking and attack the issue at hand, eh ?
Did you get a chance to try that guide I linked to ?If in doubt, Google it. -
Not yet, it's been a very busy week and to be perfectly honest, the music video quality wasn't real good to begin with. I'm going to get ahold of something else and try it with your suggestions. Thanks again.......
