  1. To make a movie backup DVD using the steps below, don't I skip capturing video from the steps below?

    1. Capture the video. (only if from video, vhs,tv,cam,dv). --> Capture How To's

    2. Convert the video to VCD,SVCD or DVD MPEG video. --> Convert How To's

    3. Author the MPEG video which means adding menus, chapters or still pictures and then build the VCD,SVCD or DVD file structure. --> Author How To's

    4. Burn the authored video, usually directly when authoring in step 3. --> Burn How To's

    5. Play the burnt video on your DVD Player. --> DVD Players compatibility

Is converting video same as decoding/encoding?
Also, do DVD Decrypter and DVD shrink both do the same?

Can you confirm all I need is one of these 2 programs listed above to decode/encode then a program like nero to burn to DVD?

Can you decode/encode with any of these programs above using a DVD-ROM as well as DVD-RW?

    Thanks.

    Thanks

    DVDDecrypter removes material.
DVDShrink removes material and shrinks the remaining material....leaving you with material that is ready to burn to DVD instantly.
The material you get from DVDDecrypter needs more "work" done to it in order for it to be burned to DVD.
For simply backing up DVD's...use DVDShrink until you get the hang of the more technical aspects. LEARN the re-author mode in DVDShrink. You can make a backup with NO MENU, take off the extra landuages and subtitles that you'll never use anyway...and it should play straight away in your DVD Player.

Most commercial DVDs are DVD-9 and won't fit on the regular DVD-5. That is where programs like DVDShrink come in to reduce the size to DVD-5 to allow you to back them up. There is also DVD Dual layer that can fit most DVDs onto a single disc, without shrinking, but at a price. They are presently very expensive.

But, if you have a commercial DVD-5, all you need to do is decrypt it and copy it. DVDDecrypter can do that.

Converting a DVD-9 with Shrink is not encoding, it's transcoding. Encoding is done by a program such a TMPGEnc encoder or similar.

For backing up most all commercial DVDs, DVDShrink is good, though some DVDs may need decryption with DVDDecrypter or the newer DVDFab decrypter before using Shrink.

DVD-ROM or DVD-RW will both transfer the DVD file to the computer. The DVD-ROM is usually faster, but some DVD-RW can be modified by a firmware upgrade to work faster. Only the DVD-RW can burn the DVD.

  5. Great, thanks for clarifications.

How can I tell if a DVD is 9 or 5?

How will I know if some DVD's may need decryption with a program like DVDDecrypter or the newer DVDFab decrypter before using Shrink?

Sounds like learning DVD Shrink is a good place to start.

    Thanks.

When you run DVDSHRINK, it will tell you how long the movie is. If it is over 5gb, I would split it into 2 dvd's to keep high quality.

Only a few newer DVDs require DVDFab or DVDDecrypter, though some people use them on all discs. If DVDShrink can't rip the DVD or you get errors, then use FAB or Decrypter. It's usually obvious right away.

  8. Ok, I tried backing up my DVD and got a Cyclic rdunddancy error, after searching I found out that I should try using DVD Decryptor or DVDFab Decryptor..so I was finally able to rip the movie completely using DVDFab, but now I'm gonna use DVDShrink to get it in order but I don't understand how I can set it up like it is originally on the disk.

For example when I went to the Re-Author option and tried adding all the things it just adds them regularly like they were regular files instead of grouping them in folders and keeping them organized. I loaded up the IFO files as well and all they do is just replace the added file with the new added file. I hope you guys understand what I am saying and any suggesstions would be very helpful.

If you want the whole movie, with all the extras, just Shrink it. You can use deep analysis to improve the quality. If the Shrink rate is too high, then you reauthor. Worst case, you can use two disks. Put the movie on one and the extras on the second.

On the majority of movies, I just dump the extras; Directors cut, extra languages, subtitles, everything but 5.1 audio and the main movie.

  10. No I don't think you understand what I'm saying.

Im not talking about improving the quality or nothing, this has nothing to do with the quality...

What I am talking about is the structure of the DVD...for example I ripped the Dvd but when I add it to DVDShrink it doesn't add the same way, its all over the place or everything just gets added to one folder.

    For example.

    Main Movie
    Extras
    Menus

etc etc...when I rip the DVD using a different method everything gets added to the Main movie and not like that..
