  1. Hi guys I wonder if you can offer a couple of tips. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

A relative has an external USB frame grabber. He's grabbed some video (Mpeg 2), but it's 4.8GB in size so it won't fit on a DVD-R blank. He wants to split the file, but I mentioned that perhaps it would be a better idea to do a slight compression.

I am a bit confused as regards my options. I would be really grateful if you could offer some advise on what to do..are there any apps that can shrink and/or split single Mpeg2 files, then output them to Nero or am I asking too much of the app? The apps that can shrink them seem to require a lot of know-how, or are geared towards compressing whole DVD films rather than single files. I could be wrong, it's just that I am a bit confused about what to do next. I don't mind spending a bit of money on software to get the job done, and figured this is a good place to ask.

Once again thanks for any help. All the best to you guys

Well to get the best results you should recapture using the correct bitrate...

Easiest would be to go ahead and author the mpeg to dvdfiles on your hard drive then use dvdshrink and transcode.

Use DVDshrink to compress. Only minimal compression needed as source file size is 4.8gb. It will use Nero to burn disc as you requested. Million and one guides to using this app. It is a fairly straightforward app. Any problems then re-post.

ReJig (as opposed to DVDShrink) works for shrinking mpg files. So, either author an oversized DVD and use DVDShrink, or shring the mpg with ReJug before authoring. I suspect the final quality will be the same.

  5. Guys,

Thank you for all your help. I was not too familiar with some of the procedures but you made them very easy to understand.

Can I just ask..when you mention author an oversize DVD - which software would do this?

Hmm. Transcoding or truncating individual files would give me better quality options (if it's that noticeable, as mentioned). Whereas authoring an oversize ISO image and then compressing it seems a bit easier..I like the sound of this option I have used DVD Shrink before and got some excellent results when backing up entire movie discs.

I was originally contemplating getting a DVD player that could accept raw MPEG-2 files, but haven't seen those. I'll also try and find out what grabbing software he's using - see if there's some options he can use to keep that file size down.

Once again thanks for all your help.

Tmpgenc DVD Author (AKA TDA), tell it to ignore if it gives an oversize warning.

Dvd lab(my personal favorite) does as well.
It's been a while since I've used them but I think the free programs dvdauthorgui and guifordvdauthor both allow to author an oversized dvd to the hard drive.
