  1. First off I wasn't capturing a disney tape or anything so I'm not sure if its exactly MV but I'm sure there was a protection of some sort since it was a commerical tape produced by a tv company. Anyways I bought a 9800 AIW a few weeks ago, the drivers I'm using are from the CD so not any updated ones found on the web, or maybe the drivers on the cds are the latest I don't know. I went to http://www.biline.ca/ati_macrovision.htm and downloaded the zip mentioned in method 1. Before I replaced the file, I had try to record and the screen came out green ( big suprise ), then I replaced it and it came out perfectly. I was so glad and I figured I'd share it with you guys, no TBC or Stabiliziers required. Do reply here if you're successful

    My capture card:
** ATI Rage Fury Pro (AGP)
    ** OS: win98x

Unfortunately, after trying the 1st method (I'm under win98x) it
failed. It captures, but the MV is still there - source curls
quite heavily at the top, and reaches down towards the center of
    the video. Very badly.

Thank you for bringing this tweak method to my attention.

About a month ago , i installed that drivers.
They fucked off my ati radeon 9200. It won't work again ( the capture part).
    I lost 120 dollars!

Now i only see a blue screen blinking

Did you rename your old "ativmvxx.ax" before you tried the
new one in the .zip file from the 1st method ??

If you did not, then you lost it. But, you can regain it if
you re-install the capture drivers (and probably the whole
    MMC as well)

If you go the re-install route, be sure to delete the .zip
verison of the "ativmvxx.ax" file. Then, un-install your
    MMC, and ATI capture drivers.

Then, re-install your MMC and ATI capture drivers.

    Hope that one works.

I wish I could get my ATI to become MV 'free, but so far, it
has not been successful. My card sure does a better job at
    VHS source materails, IMHO.

I'm back. The 4x tweaks failed in my given setup. The MV
continued to show in all my tapes.

But, I haven't given up on it. My ATI Rage Fury Pro does
an excellent job on my VHS tapes, IMHO. So much, that I
want to consider using it in my VHS projects. But this MV
is really giving me a headacke. And, I don't want to use
a TBC or other gizmo device, because in my observation, they
slightly alter the video quality level, and I want to minimize
as many in-between as possible, and have the best
    video picture to work with.

    As an update ...

In short, no more Macrovision, but.., read on..

I have met up with some success, but at the resorting of
forgoing my ATI Rage Furo Pro for capturing, and instead,
poping back in, an older card (newer to the Rage Fury in
my system) ..older than todays current ATI card lineup.

As I was saying.. I popped back in my old 'er ATI TV Wonder VE
capture card. This one allowed me to install the VFW drivers,
and MMC, which came with the older MMC 6.2 version
Course, I am not using it, but it doesn't matter. Because
the Macrovision is not there. I can play ALL of my
Commercial VHS tapes through it, and every one will show up
clean, w/ out MV on it.

Also, the Ativmvxx.ax file is nowhere to be found,
after this VFW driver installation and a careful HDD search
    for it.

And last, my capture looks pretty good, considering it is
Composite only captures. I was very pleased with the results.

    Line Noise ...

The bad.. is that I have line noise. Looks like I will never
be rid of them, unless I go external hardware, like my prefered
holy grail, the ADVC-100 box. But, I do not recommend this
    for Commercial VHS tapes
, because of the Transfer Method used
in these videos. However, anything recorded to VHS from our
regular home equipment, is perfectly fine for the ADVC-100 box,
and comes out great, and I highly recommend the ADVC-100 for this.

If the ATI-TV Wonder VE (in my given setup) did not suffer from
this Line Noise, it would be the next best thing to my ADVC-100
bar none. But, the Line Noise puts a huge damper on my final
    MPEG's.

Very briefly.. the line noise is not caused be my house hold
wiring, nor grounding, or looping or whatever.. but is caused
by my PC. Either mother board, or UPS fan. This is a whole
nother story, for another threaded topic (I started years ago,
and still am plauged - Line Noise - mostly from VCR sources...)

    So, to recap ...
** I suffer from Line Noise in my ATI-TV Wonder VE captures. But
I don't think it is worth it, to go this route on account of this
    noise.

    ** I can capture w/out Macrovision w/ my ATI-TV Wonder VE card,
and VFW drivers installed, though Composite only.. but does very
well at it with all my Commercial VHS tapes and uncompressed YUY2
(non-huffy) as the final format. Huffy still (though lightely)
    compresses, hence is lossy.

This has been my experience with fighting Macrovision on an ATI
capture card. Your mileage will vary of course.

vhelp, I think your ATI TV Wonder card works without MV issues because it is a BT8xx chipset, not an ATI theater chip. I can capture with my BT878 based AverTv Stereo cards without any MV problems either, but I do have some noise problems, perhaps similar to your problem (don't know without seeing a cap).

My best solution so far for maximum quality is to use my AverMedia DVD EZMaker (with the Philips SAA713x chipset), VirtualVCR and the huffy codec. Excellent quality capture - no noise and no MV problems at all.

And just to keep this post somewhat on point, I am still unaware of any software hack to use with ATI Theater chips that *completely* eliminates *all* MV problems. But I'm certainly willing to test something out if someone has a new hack.

    Thanks brainstorm69

    Line Noise ...

About the noise. I hate it. I cant' figure it out.
But, I do have my huntch.. this being board BRAND/MAKER.
Intel vs. AMD ..that is the question. I have been cataloging
various peoples verbal comments on noise in their captures.
One thing I have noticed is they have an AMD machine.
Bottom line, (cause I don't want to OT this) is AMD=Steriods.
(You can visit the link I posted above if you like, if you have
    any questions or comments, etc)

Macrovision and other ATI cards ...

I have an idea about MV on my Theater chip (Rage Fury Pro)
that might help others too, but I have to begin the process,
and it's a lengthy one at that. Actually, it's my idea
based on observations from all my previous ATI card setups
to this. hmm.. I should probably given my AIW 96000 AGP
card a go as well. Last I tried, it worked inside my win98x setup.
Don't know which chip/version is in this one though.

ATI (newer brand devices) are servants of MV.
