questions concerning network connections

Ok i have a toshiba laptop. my first problem is that i plug my ehternet cable in and i goto network connections and nothings in there. I make a new connection it finishes but still nothing there. I have checked my network card adaptors and they are all fine i just cant seem to make a network connection. Any ideas?

How many other computers are in your network? Do you have a wireless card as well? Have you disabled it?

I have more questions, but I need the answers to these questions first.
