Doesn't look like 720p to me, it looks interlaced....

(also looks bloody horrible, if that is what NTSC HDTV looks like I'll stick with standard PAL!)

are you in the dallas area?

ABC broadcasts all of its programming using the 720p format except in Dallas, where the ABC station broadcasts in 1080i.

because that doesnt look like 720P

Last night was an 'aberration'. Just plain weird. Here's the usual image quality:

different aspect ratio and even resolution ?

    was it your capture ?

or did they film part of it in HDV (which they do use sometimes now) or DV and forgot to change it to 24p ?

BJ_M - I think ABC's transmission was seriously krunked yesterday. I kind of wanted to record the complete 1st season in HD, but they've been skipping episodes during the summer reruns

Here's 1080i (I resized the image to 1/2 the actual size). Looks OK, but I prefer 720p.

I don't follow (dropped on my head as a child). Are you saying that 'LOST' isn't recorded in Film ?

    Here's a final example of a recent 720p broadcast:

doesnt look like film in that shot (2nd one of LOST) -- imdb says 35mm , but they could be wrong or they might use more than one method or just because

  13. Sometimes the local affiliates screw it up. At least in the Atlanta area, usually when there is bad weather (as if I care if a tornado is gonna kill me, just give me the HDTV picture!). It was screwed last night, but no bad weather to speak of. It's usually great.

Last Night here, local Sacramento affiliate broadcast LOST in SDTV. There must have been a problem.

I didn't bother trying for San Francisco OTA signal.

While OT, I must admit the women on the show are very pretty. The question/answer is too much like a box of Whitman Samplers - I want to nibble on each one :

  17. Dumb question (no such thing, just dumb people),
the picture is 960x540 pixels...shouldn't it be 2160x1440? I thought 720p meant, that it was 720 multiplied by 3 (each pixel is made up of three dots red/blue/green)?

  19. So, I guess what my question is then, what does 1280 x 720 (hd signal) translate to, in pixels, on a computer monitor (3840 x 2160?)

720p displays as 1280x720 on a computer monitor.

Unlike 480i/480p 720p uses square pixels and is always 16:9 (unless you zoom it).

Likewise 1080p is always 1920x1080 square pixels 16:9 on a computer monitor, but often 1440x1080 or less in a camera or as actually recorded (e.g. HDV).

I know for a fact that ABC was working on their HD equipment last week. Consequently most programs were not broadcast in HD. Things should be back to normal this week.

Also, their HD receivers are kinda screwy and need to be re-booted every so often.

  22. Thanks for the explanation Ed,
why is the picture posted here 960x540 pixels? Shouldn't it be 1280x720?

Because it was shrunk. Hard to fit the space and 150KB limits.

Yup, I cut the size down on most of the pics because they were too big to look at on my miniscule 15" monitor

You can do a 720x480p frame cap here OK and just fit. Good for analysis.
