    Hello Community!

I am using Ulead Video Studio 7se DVD and some days ago, a problem occured. Since then, I cannot view or capture any videos.
Until then, I have recorded from a Sony DV-Recorder to the computer over Firewire. Suddenly, it stopped and some messages came up saying something like: "No valid path, name too long. [...] File damaged, could not be saved. Make sure you have a device controller installed."

I downloaded a DV recorderprogram from this site and there as well as in MediaEncoder, it did not work. No visual, no audio. I uninstalled and reinstalled ULead VideoStudio, but it did not work. I reinstalled directx, installed panasonic codec pack and suddenly, the picture came back, but just half of it. I used the codec sniper to analyse the codecs and saw some broken ones. Deleted them, reinstalled everything again and then it worked again. Exactly for one day.. Now, it stoped working again.

I am using Windows XP Pro, SP2. DX9.0c. Atlon XP 2.6GHz, 1GB ram.

I think it's a codecproblem. Could anyone help me?? I am begining to lose my mind on that stuff... Best thanks,

    Adrian

Try WinDV to test if your DirectX and XP drivers are working. Ulead Video Studio 7 sits on top of DirectShow and I think your problem is at the XP level.

The Panasonic DV driver is not needed for DV transfer. ULead uses a version of the Mainconcept DV driver when converting other files to DV.

Your Sony camcorder has already encoded the video to DV. When you transfer, you are just moving the DV stream into a DV-AVI file.

    Ah, I see. Thanks!

I tried it with WinDV, doesn't work... I have seen something in the Devicemanager: There is a device called AV/C-Tuner which doesn't have any drivers. Before my problem, it wasn't there, I am sure about that, but I had two gameportcontrollers. The other gameportcontroller with the small yellow point of exclamation is now gone. I tried to reinstall gameportdrivers, doesn't work..

Does someone know what kind of drivers I need to install for this AV/C-Tuner?

First I would diable and remove all the IEEE-1394 devices in device manager and then let them reinstall after a couple of reboots.

    What is that AV/C-Tuner?

I have found something on the net. There are others who have similar problems. It seems that after installing SP2, some files (avc.sys and msdv.sys) are not working properly anymore and prevend some DV-Devices from working over Firewire.

I am now trying to find those two files, some old pre-SP2-Versions and copy them into the necessary folders.
Microsoft had a patch for this problem, but it has disappeared from their page.. very strange.

Do you have an Idea where I can get those files from? I found a page but they charge unbelievable $9.95/file... Modern pirates in my eyes..

I have now some valuable information:

It seems that SP2 installs a new MSDV.sys and AVC.sys. Those files prevent the IEEE 1394 port to recognize the DV-Recorder correctly.
I found some help on the net how to replace those two files out of the driver.cab-archive back into SP2.cab (filearchive for windowsdrivers), but it did not work. Some others report that it worked..

I had to completely reinstall windows, first a format of the systemdrive, then a complete, clean installation of Windows XP without the servicepacks. Now it works fine again..
Microsoft doesn't have a patch for this problem ready right now, not for Win XP anyhow.. It seems that they have a hotfix for Millenium, though.

I guess you have to reinstall Windows and let it be in it's unstable, unsafe state as long as you want to capture DV...

I have no problem with that as this computer is not connected to the net, it's a videocutworkstation only.

I hope it's right what I wrote. This problem seems very new, only few report about that sort of problem.

Greetings and thanks for your help,

    Adrian
