NEC Unveils First HD-DVD Multireader for PC

The world's first 5 1/4 inch PC drive HR-1100A for HD-DVDs from NEC will be available from October onwards. The HD DVD drive plays back HD-DVDs, DVDs and CDs. This is all down to the optical head that was developed by NEC which can read blue, red and ultra-violet light.

The NEC HD DVD Multireader HR-1100A is the first drive that is capable of reading the HD-DVD format. HD DVD media are read at 2x speed. DVD minus and DVD plus media can be read at up to 8x DVD speed, as well as rewritable and dual-layer DVDs. It can also read DVD-RAMs at 5x speed. Finally, the HD-DVD Multireader delivers a convincing 32x CD speed as CD-ROM drive. The new HD DVD standard enables a storage capacity of up to 64 GB – which is over 13 times greater than that of a conventional DVD – as well as 16 hours of recording and playback in HD quality.






The HR-1100A will be available in the market in January 2006, at a price tag of 500 Euros

But im holding onto my money for the moment, I would wait for a dual drive supporting both HD-DVD and Blu Ray.

Do you know of any computer display cards that currently support HDCP? I don't.

Microsoft is working on a standard for MCE but are at prototype stage.

I see that ATI is starting to use the term "HDCP ready" on some of their new cards. I guess that means support will come with future drivers.

Nvidia is also saying "(DVI 1.0 compliant and HDCP ready)" on the 6600.

Hmm . . OK! I guess I own 4 worthless drives that work faster than my writers and lessen wear and tear on my burners, but to each their own.

I see no one has questioned the hole in the outer shell of this one. Can anyone say dust magnet? For 500 euros I hope they close that gap. No sale here. Blu-Ray is . . . or I should say will be the industry standard for next gen DVD before the end of next year.

well....once someone figures out how to rip an HD DVD, that may be of interest.....but for now, no thanks.....(id use it to rip movies to HD DIVX and just buy an HD Divx player

Geez, the "hole" is not an open hole, its closed with some see-thru plastic, in other words: its a window obviously. I'll eat my socks if this unit - any unit - will be sold in retail with such a giant hole

BTW - whats wrong with HD-DVD that someone already need HD-DIVX crap?! geeez...
