If its 5 years out that's probably longer than SONY will be in the electronics business.

No company is as tone-deaf to the market as SONY.

Sony makes good TV sets. That's really all I'd give them credit for.

10 years from now, those screens gonna be 40 - 42", far more bright and cheap enough. Eventually, they gonna replace the LCD screens.

  10. After reading some more on OEL it looks like it will be the display of the future:
    Low power consumption(no backlight)
    High contrast
    Thin display(<5mm)

WOW!! What a UNIMAGINABLE exciting technological future prediction.....NOT!!!!
Considering the evolution of displays in the last decade alone thats not much of a (exciting) prediction is it imo.

When i read this today i thought imediately of this forum for comments. IMO its the usual insidious Sony history (trying to) floging any "old" new technology (regardless of it being superflious, uneeded, too much in its infancy to be practical/saleable / poorly/underdeveloped) to make $$$ from the gullable and those with more money than they could possibley spend in a lifetime (like that boastful multimiliionaire plane buying poster claiming his personal importance in making technology ( in the thread on new OD tech war) afordible for the unwashed masses - when its actually his money itself thats important not him and would be merely redistrubuted to others who would do the same with such buying potential, if he never existed).

An 11" display for +1k$ even if all the claimed advantages are true (unlike (at least UK 1st generation) plasma TVs which were plagued with endless quality + breakdown problems which you would have thought would have taught those so gullabley trusting of electronics mnfts a lesson) is a complete joke being so far away from practicle reality. Sony says its alright for them to rape you of your cash as its "greener" - what they probably don't tell use is the manufacturing process will cause more overall detriment to the environment than from the energy production saved by the use of all these OEL screens

Apparently the lifespan isn't very good either:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organic_light-emitting_diode#Drawbacks

It's not a problem in cell phones since the turnover rate is high. Also the display is on for a relatively short time compared to a TV.

A TV based on current OLED technology will not only be expensive to begin with, but also the lifespan would be several times lower than LCD or plasma.

Things may change, though. I'm sure they'll improve the technology.

rotten apple, when I talk about 10 years, I mean worldwide AVERAGE time.
UK may adapt those new screens in less time. But what about Moldova for example?

It really amazes me that many forum members tend to think only on their local / west world scale of things.

Why not? The largest market for high end consumer electronics is the west and far east.

Because this is an international forum rhegedus. When you post here, you post to the world. This is not a local forum. Keep in mind that.

Regarding TVs: Philips LCDs TVs are crap in my eyes. Sony's are Samsung's. IMO, on LCD TVs, Samsung today is No1, followed by Sharp.

That's all very nice, but I can't see there being much of a market for next generation technology in countries where the GDP per capita is less than the cost of a HDTV.

I'll bear that in mind - I'm more of a plasma fan, but there arean't many 1080p plasmas about.

Rhegedus, we don't care if there is much of a market in a country or not. Here is a technology forum, not a market place!
Technology and the shared knowledge of, cost nothing on forums. Talking about technology, cost nothing. Looking pictures and dreaming about technology and how to get it, cost nothing.
This is what the forums are about. We don't sell things here, we share what we know about our hobby (because this is a hobby for the most of us afterall. Sure many pro's are here, but for learning / discuss issues, not to sell products! That is spam and Spamming is not allowed here!)

I used to be a fan of plasma screens myself few years ago. But I'm more on multimedia than movies, so eventually I end up a fan of the LCD screens. Also classic cartoons looks better on LCD than on Plasma (IMO...)
