I use the Canon GL1 in "frame" mode to record progressive scan (non-interlaced) DV files. I then capture them (to PC via firewire) and convert them to full frame 720x480 MPEG1 files (with TMPGenc) for use in Powerpoint presentations. I do this because Powerpoint does not handle MPEG2 interlaced files well (it plays everything non-interlaced). It is also useful because nearly every computer has an MPG1 codec installed, so I can leave the MPG files in the presentation without linking to an external program to play interlaced files).
Currently I capture to AVI then use Tmpgenc to convert to MPEG1 (@720x480).
Does anyone know of a Capture utility the will capture directly to full frame MPEG1? There are plenty that can capture to MPEG2 or standard MPEG1 (320x240 or 352x240) but I haven't seen one with the ability to set the size of the MPEG1 capture.

Have you tried Premiere or Vegas set to 720x480 MPeg1 project standard?

for capture to mpeg1 , doesnt mainconcept also capture to mpeg1 besides 2?
be aware though that you camera does pulldown and you should really cap to dv and then to mpeg1 (removing pulldown)"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
Thanks for the input.
Capturing to DV then converting to MP1 with Tmpgenc works fine, but it requires two steps (and more storage space).
Regarding pulldown: As far as I know the GL1 frame mode does a pseudo progressive scan, which they call "frame scan" which does some very clever combinations of the red, blue and green sensors. It is not as much information as true progressive scan, but still impressive. The bottom line is that the DV output from frame mode is 30 fps (29.97 fps) non-interlaced. I think you have to get up to the XL line before you can do 24p and need to worry about pulldown.
As far as Premiere goes, I do use Premiere if I want to add titles or anything fancy. But I find Tmpgenc much more convenient if all I want to do is convert clips.
