I've had plenty of hard drives fail but never like this.

Its just a storage drive, no system files. I immediately tried to copy files from it when I heard the taletell clicking sounds but it would just churn for a long time then error out. Then any attempts resulted in a BSOD and now I can't even have the drive hooked up without getting a BSOD at startup.

I've tried replacing the cable and hooking it up to various inputs (both IDE chains, and a raid input.) I'd like to recover some of the files but there's no way I'm paying for a full blown archival service.

    ANY suggestions?

Possibly recovery software and/or the freezer treatment.

Invest in a USB/IDE External case. You will find it incredibly useful in recovering info from bad hard disks. I've seen this before. For some reason the IDE bus will lock whereas the USB doesn't. If the data is unrecoverable, the drive will not appear when you plug the USB cable in. After you've run this test, you will have yourself an external box good for any internal HDD or internal optical drive in an external environment. Usually cost anywhere between $30 - $50 USD.
