How to do this using TMPGEnc and/or DG pulldown? I read not to convert from 25 fps to 29.97 fps but instead slow 25 fps down to 23.976 fps. Anyone know? 23.976 fps is OK for NTSC standard?

I assume you're doing this for a PAL>NTSC DVD conversion..Encode the video as 23.976, then set the 29.97 flags (required for NTSC DVD) by either using the 23.976 -> 29.97 option in DGpulldown, or use the 23.976 (29.97 when playback) in TMPGenc..Personally, I use the DGpulldown method. Also, don't forget to change the "FPS" (a bit of a misnomer) of your audio (via BeSweet / BeLight or some other) to 23.976, to match the new video framerate..Not 29.97 - it won't playback right..

[edit] 29.97fps (without the flags) is also OK for NTSC, but wouln't work in your case..The video would be sped up too much, and it would end up sounding like the chipmunks .

Take a look at this thread:

I would do it the DGPulldown method described in the above thread.

I endoded PAL clip to NTSC resolution then 25->29.97 (DG pulldown). Both NTSC 25 and 29.97 clips play a little jerky. GSPOT tells me that DG pulldown clip (25->29.97) is 23.976 pics/sec and 29.976 frames/sec. It should say 25 pics/sec and 29.976 frames/sec?

You have a 25fps PAL clip ... correct?

You convert this to a 25fps clip but with a NTSC resolution such as 720x480

Then in DGPulldown you use the 25fps ---> 29.970fps option

Should not be "jerky" unless you did your conversioin incorrectly.

How are you converting the original 25fps PAL clip to a new NTSC frame size but 25fps clip?

Try playing the converted Mpeg2 files with VLC. I've found that MediaPlayerClassic's built in Mpeg2 decoder doesn't quite play it smoothly.
