  1. I have a pIV 3.2 1024 mem.
    Asus p4800-E deluxe 8xAGP
I don't play games, but I'm into digital photos and
    make home movies
    I have a Rosewell 9600 256 mb card (it's flakey, don't want another Rosewell 4sure)

Making DVD's is slow can the video card speed that up, or am I cpu bound Are there any cards with mpeg2 built in?

I like passsive cooling, I don't want another noisy fan. I like for it to quiet if it does have a fan.

Anyone got any experience or suggestions?

    Oh yeah, $100 - $150
    Thanks

If you want to capture from external sources you will need a capture card with MPEG2 (SVCD,DVD) hardware capturing like a Hauppauge WinTV PVR-350 or Adaptec VideOh! PCI.

    https://www.videohelp.com/capturecards.php?CaptureCard=&mpeg2=1&searchconnection=PCI&pr...orderby=Rating

On the other hand if you already have your videos in your hard disk and you want to convert them to MPEG2, then you will probably need a faster CPU. The higher the MHz the faster the transcoding.

What software are you using? Changibg software may also help in this matter.

  3. thanks

I actually capture the video on another nachine that uses an ATI AIW

Then I use uLead MovieFactory 4 to burn to DVD, it takes a lot of time to build the video before it burns it to DVD, I go to dinner while it's working.
The machine I use for burning is a PIV 3.2 ghz with 1 gig memory

I wonder if AMD is better equipped.

ofbarea didn't say it directly, but your video card really has no effect on encoding speed. As he mentioned, it's all in the CPU speed and the encoding software/settings.

EDIT: Your P4 3.2Ghz should be fast enough. I would try a different encoding method.

  5. You might want to try different software for burning. It sounds like ULead is trying to re-encode the video, which will only lower the quality and take much longer - the MPEG file that you capture should already be DVD compliant.

It might be cheaper and better to invest in a better DVD authoring software.

How fast is too slow? I think maybe you are expecting too much from your system. One poster's suggestion about upgrading your processor is not really option. You are pretty much at the top of the single core processor line. Post back with your encode times.
