I recently changed the speed of dvd-r that i use from RiDisc 4 times to RiDisc 8 times, after burning a movie at max with dvddecrypter i found that my standalone makes a lot of clicking noises while the movie plays the new disc, i wrote another at 4 times and the clicking is a lot less loud and with a memorex dvd-rw 2 times there is no clicking at all. Dvd decrypter tells me that the new disc's support 2.4, 4 and 8 times writing speed so i thought i would write to the disc at the slowest speed possible(2.4) and cut the noise from my standalone completely. I got a coffee mat back.

I think the disc's are manufactured by a company called Ritek. I notice that the dye on the new disc's isn't as dark as on the old disc's, does this mean the quality isn't as good? Any ideas why i can't write at slower than 4 times with them?

The guy in the store where i bought them from said that my old disc's weren't being manufactured anymore and the 8 times had replaced them, can anyone confirm this or is said storekeeper pulling my plonker?

    Love crock.

A lot of clicking probably means the player is having seeking problems and is having a hard time reading or keeping focused on the tracks.

That's not good and can damage the player if it happens a lot. Usually they give up and spit out the disc. You may notice the disc is overly warm, also. My laptop does that on occasion. Sometimes it indicates that the read laser needs cleaning.

Have you checked Lord Smurf's site? http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm A lot of good media information there.

Thanks redwudz, my player doesn't spit the disc out but the noise can irritate during quiet scenes in the movie clickclickclickclickclick ad nauseum.

    Thanks for the link.

    Peace.

  4. The storekeeper is right about 4x product, they aren't made anymore. You can still find them at a few online shops for about the same price as 8x though.
Sounds to me like the disc is unbalanced in the player. I assume you aren't using any king of paper label on the disc, as that's a no-no. If it is unbalanced and the reader can play it fine it shouldn't hurt it. I can see what your saying about it being annoying though. My old Toshiba used to make that noise with DVD-Rs so I retired it. DVD players are cheap, so I would suggest replacing the player if it's old, switching back to 4x product, or switching to another brand. You can buy test packs of discs from places like Rima.com (a recognized great online seller, not affiliated with them):
    DVD-Rs if you are interested:

DVD+Rs if you want to stick with them:
