First, you need to find out how long your movie is. Then you pick the speed that is appropriate. For example if your movie is 2 hours, you choose SP mode to record to the hard drive. If your movie is 1 hour 30 min, then choose the MN feature and use the appropriate number that matches close to the 1 hour 30 min mark. This way you will maximize the best disc space.
Finally, when you're ready to record to dvd-r, then select high speed. High speed never requires an re-encode and is ALWAYS the best. IF you movie is over 2 hours (let's say 2 hours 30 minutes) then it will not let you record in high speed, it will need to re-encode the video in real time and will not look as good. I would never record anything over 2 hours 10 minutes because it just doesn't look good. Good luck -
I have the 530 and record everything in SP Video Mode. If the recording is longer than 2 hours, you can edit and split whatever you have recorded into two images .... then record both images to two -RW discs.
Use DVD Shrink to burn each disc in Folder Form to the HDD on your computer and then import both files into DVD Shrink and create one ISO image, then burn that ISO image onto a DVD blank using DVD Decrypter.
By using this method the end result is VERY near the quality of the image on the original HDD recording in SP mode.
