How can this be done? When I use this player with component cables on my HDTV, I get discreet rolling lines in the background of the picture, and sometimes some digital blocky ghosting effects. When I use the same cables and such on a diff player, I don't get this image disruption.
I think I may have buggerd up a setting somewhere, so I would like to start from scratch.

This is how it is done on the Pioneer DVR-510H-S and it probably is the same for yours:
1. Make sure the recorder is on.
2. Press and hold Stop and press Standyb/On.
The recorder turns off with all settings reset.
This instruction is at the top of the "Additional Information" chapter in the manual.
