I keep experince at lot of sync-problem in my editingprogram (Vegas 4.0e) but I don't know where the actual problem lies? I'm surposed to edit a recording of a theaterplay for a friend of mine and he gave me 3 different recordings on a DVD..."Video_TS"-format (I think it's called Vob-files, right?) I tried to open the vob-files in Vegas directly from the VIDEO_TS-folder but there were no audiotrack. Then I tried to rip the recordings using #1 DVD Ripper making the files into avi (DivX codec 5.2.1). (Later on I was told that it would be better to make DV avi files if it's going to be edited, but I don't know how that's done?).
So I ended up with 3 Avi(DivX) files, but when I opend them in Vegas the picture and audio are out of sync on one or more of the files (it varies how many and whitch ones???Very strange!) If I correct the sync and render the files (MPEG2) then the resultes are out of sync when I open it(WINDVD). ARRRG! I'v made sure the check the audio frequence: The files are 44.100 Hz and the project-properties setting in Vegas are set to the same.
I'v tried to open the 3 files in Movie Maker and they seems to be in sync there. So...
Is it Vegas that causes the problems? (Would it help if I upgradet to Vegas 6.0b?)
    Is it a Codec-problem?
Is it the files....? should I try to make them into DV avi? How?
Or...mayby someone could recommend a freeware editing program (or a tryout) that I could try.(I'v tried Adobe Premiere but it was a LOT slower than Vegas. ..mayby it's my computer?)
I just need to do some very basic editing, but Movie Maker just isn't enough? Please help. Thank you.

You could try the Vegas 6 demo and see if you fair better.

I believe that with virtualdubmpeg and the panasonic codec you should be able to produce DV-avi output. Expect much larger files than your current divx versions though.

divx is not for editing ... and that is the source of your problems (the conversion to divx) .. plus you prob. used VBR mp3 audio (bad news) , also you converted the native dvd audio 48khz to 44.1khz was also a big mistake..

Why dont you use the original recordings / tapes ?

If you install the demo of Sony Movie Studio , you should be able to read the audio AC3 right off the dvd's in vegas 4 ... as vegas can now read ac3 multiplexed in a VOB..

Vegas will also read AC3 multiplexed into a program stream

Thanks a lot . But I don't know what BJ_M meens by "Vegas will also read AC3 multiplexed into a program stream"?. I can't seem to find "Sony movie Studio" anywere. I'v downloadet the Virtualdub-MPEG 1.6.10 but I don't know how to to use it "with the panasonic codec?" to produce a DV avi? Sorry but i'm just a newbie.
Could you explaine it in a "...for dummies"-way or mayby explaine where to find the relevant programs and codecs?

Ok. I'v tried to convert a small sample(a vob-file) with virtualdubmpeg and it worked fine! Except that the preview had stripes(interlace? I tried to change the fieldorder (A, B progressiv), but no luck) Nevermind...the stripes didn't show up on the final DV-file. Hurrey! Now I just hope that when I try with a larger sample that the audio and picture are still sync. Thank you guns1inger

Still it would be nice to be able to open the vob-files directly in my Vegas 4.0.
Question to BJ_M. If I download and install "Vegas® Movie Studio™+DVD 6.0" (=the link you gave me) I should be able to open the vobfiles in my Vegas 4.0e??? Just dobblechecking before I start downloading for a LONG time (I have a slow internet connection)

  11. You've got to be kidding me!!! Movie Studio supports native VOB editing, but Vegas 6 does not!!!

This is a frickin' joke, Sony's screwing us!

as i said -- Vegas also supports the IMPORT of VOBs, mpeg2 and 5.1 or 2ch ac3 (muxed in a stream (program, Ts or VOB) ...

please read above posts on how to activate it ...

  13. So if I install the demo of Movie Studio, it will enable vob editing in Vegas 6? Is that what's alluded to in the above posts? If so, do I have to leave Movie Studio installed or what's the deal? I really don't want it on my system, but it might be worth it if I can edit VOB's in Vegas 6.

  15. Wow! where to you get this info?

    dling now...

EDIT: thanks a lot for the info... it worked like a charm. I've been wanting to check out movie studio for a while, so I'm not going to uninstall right now. Probably soon though.
