  1. hi.

i used advanced x video converter to convert avi files onto cd and it worked great (other than the fact that i cant seem to scan through the vcd cause it will freeze)

however, my question is about the "all to dvd" option.
this is what i chose since the original file (mpeg) is 800 mb before conversion to mpeg2/dvd.

after waiting over 7 hours for this to 'convert'
i woke up to find 3 files:

    - first one is 2.72 gigs in size and ends with: _output
    - second one is about 84 megs and ends with: _output_aud
    - third file is 2.59 gigs and ends with: output_vid.m2v

i tried burning with decrypter as well as nero but they fail to even see it.

help please, what is the next step - what can i do with these files

Looks like that _output is audio + video (.aud + .m2v) multiplexed. Rename it to _output.mpg (or do you have themoststupiddefaultofalltime setting "Hide extensions of known file types" activated?) and author it with a DVD authoring app like TMPGEnc DVD Author.

  3. thanx mats, but do i really need to author this (and get all the software required) since it is only a single file-movie.
ill be happy if i stick the disc in the dvd player and it just starts playing the movie (actually that would be my prefferred option)
i just want some sort of burning software to see it/burn it.
and make it watchable on a desktop dvd player.
(i really dont care about menus, chapters, etc...)

also when u mentioned "(or do you have themoststupiddefaultofalltime setting "Hide extensions of known file types" activated?)"
which app r u talking about?
    axvconverter?
    nero?
    dercrypter?
    or windows?

and where is the option/box to change that?

  4. Hi-

He means that there should be an extension to tell you, for example, what kind of audio is it, like _output_aud.ac3.

Anyway, perhaps the easiest way to author is to get MuxMan, and then feed it the M2V, and the Audio (whatever it is, hoping it's DVD compliant). Then make an image file and burn with DVD Decrypter. Perhaps the easiest way to do that and combine both of the final steps (image creation and burn) is by using ImgTool Classic.

Oh yeah, don't forget to create a VIDEO_TS folder and stick all the files that MuxMan, or any other authoring app, creates into it, and also create an empty AUDIO_TS folder.

Hello hex carrier, mats.hogberg is talking about your OS setup.

To see all of your file exstensions go to control panel>folder options>view and under advanced settings uncheck the box next to hide exstensions for known file types.

A Video DVD has to be authored. Some players (check your manual) play "raw" mpg files. If so, just burn it to a DVD as data. But that still wont make it a Video DVD.

It's Windows. To "dumb down", it by default hides the extension of files it knows (or think it knows) how to handle. For more experienced users, like you and me, who like to know what we're dealing with, it should be turned off, the way thecrock explains, or from the Tools menu in any folder view.
What if you see a file "JLoNaked.jpg" and (of course by mistake!) click it, it could as well be "JLoNaked.jpg.exe" you clicked, that installs the nastiest virus mankind has ever devised, but since Windows knows how to handle an .exe file, it "protects" you from such distractions...

  7. appreciate the help.

i turned of the extensions option, and here are the extensions:

    - 2.7gig file is .mpg
    - 83 meg file is .mpa
    - 2.5 gig file is .m2v

the resaon why i didnt think i would need to author this is because when im making a VCD with the same program (advanced x video converter) i judt drop the file that it creates into nero(vcd) and it plays on a dvd player.

i just assumed I would get the same results with dvd since its the same program (that the end file will be something i can just drop into nero(dvd))

the weird thing is that my original file (approx 800megs) was a .mpg

and now advanced x video converter simply seperated video and audio, and made larger mpegs?

  8. ok, i also just noticed that the quality of the output file is WAY worse than that of the original file!

so i went from 800meg MPEG good quality to 2.6 gig MPEG bad quality.....

If the original mpg already mpeg2, you should be able to just use NERO to burn the file as a VCD.

the original file extension is .mpg
(i dont know is if its mpeg2)

and this is what i was hoping for, but unfortunately the file is just too big to fit on a cd.
and nero doesnt give me the option of putting a vcd on a dvd

No, but if it's a valid VCD or DVD mpg to start with, why process it at all? And, if your player plays raw mpg, just burn the file to a DVD as data.
Or, if it's a valid DVD mpg (VCD mpg is almost valid) - TMPGEnc DVD Author (among other authoring apps) can author it as DVD.
TDA has a free 30 day trial. Try it out.
Advanced X Video Converter har obviously decided to reencode your source MPG, to a mpg with more DVD-ish bit rate & resolution, but as you'll never gain quality by reencoding (as you've noticed!) it should be avoided if possible.

    Not necessarily.

DVD spec calls for specific resolutions, GOP size and more. IOW a 720 by 480 MPEG2 file could be DVD ready or not, but for sure a 640 by 480 MPEG2 is not DVD ready, resolution is wrong.

Hope this helps. Look on the left for what is a DVD.

    Cheers
