    hi,

I captured a tv special at halfd1 mpeg2. I'm trying to convert it to divx. I got a great bitrate but it comes out squizhed vertically. It's not fullscreen.

    Here's the mpg file:

    And here's the divx:

I tried setting the divx output to 352x480 and 640x480 and even 720x480 (virtualdubmpeg2). None worked to get a full screen output. The weird thing is windows movie maker makes a full screen wmv out of the halfd1 mpeg but virtualdub won't.

I even tried cropping and resizing the video but I don't know enough about those features to correct this in virtualdub. The wmv looks good enough but I think the divx I've made is clearer. I want to use divx how do I make sure it stays full screen???

    Any ideas??? Thanks.

    Kevin

EDIT - Trust me the divx is squished in the middle of the screen - I used windows media player classic to take the snapshot but it only cropped the actual video not the empty spaces on either side.

    EDIT 2 - Here's the gspot ratio info on the divx file - 352x480 (1:1.36) [=11:15]

Add the resize filter and set it to 640x480 and lanczos3 in virtualdub. Or did you try that?

    Hi,

I tried the 640x480 resize in divx with virtualdub but it didn't help.

What is the lanczos3? I'm not familiar with that feature in virtualdub.

    Thanks for the tips.

    Hi,

    Thanks baldrick that did it!

I did a net search for resize virtualdub and found it on the vdub website. I loaded it thru the filter program set to 640x480 and it came out completely full screen.

    Thanks again

    Kevin

(I was doing it through the divx resize option and not vdubs, so now I know to try a regular filter first for the next time )

You're not trying to use Direct Stream Copy or Fast Recompress mode are you? You have to use Full Processing mode to resize or to use any other filters.

Lanczos3 is one of the resizing filters in VirtualDub:

I tried the Divx resize tonight for the first time, results were not as expected. IE didnt work.

Use filters for everything, INCLUDING deinterlacing, in VDub. Just use Divx for the CODEC and nothing else IMHO.

    Good luck,
    Andrew

I'd do 512x384 resolution, personally. You'll want to smart deinterlace too.
